A look at football recruiting classes
Last Wednesday, the second part of the college football signing period opened and the three local Division I programs have varying storylines with their respective classes and moving forward.
Let’s start with Pitt.
According to 247Ãå±±½ûµØ, Pitt’s class is ranked 55th with 18 three-star recruits among its signings.
As far as the ACC, 247Ãå±±½ûµØ has Pitt ranked 12th out of 14 teams.
Rivals has Pitt 50th nationally and 10th in the ACC while ESPN has the Panthers at 48th nationally and ninth in the ACC.
Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi, who is a solid in-game coach, really has to get things going from a recruiting standpoint for Pitt to take the next step.
West Virginia came in at 49th nationally according to 247Ãå±±½ûµØ with a pair of four stars and 18 three stars.
Not bad considering new head coach Neal Brown started on Jan. 5.
Rivals has WVU at 47th while ESPN has it ranked 44th.
In the Big 12, 247Ãå±±½ûµØ has WVU ranked seventh out of 10 teams while Rivals and ESPN has it sixth.
Penn State finished 13th at 247Ãå±±½ûµØ with one five-star recruits, 17 four-stars and five three-stars.
Rivals has PSU ranked 11th and ESPN has it ranked 13th.
In the Big Ten, 247Ãå±±½ûµØ, Rivals and ESPN all has Penn State second.
PSU head coach James Franklin has been bringing in solid classes for several years now, and the team needs to get past all of the players it will lose in the transfer portal.
PSU Fayette looking for post-season berth
While the Penn State Fayette women’s basketball team has already clinched a spot in the PSUAC tournament, the men’s team needs a win Friday at home against PSU Greater Allegheny.
Simply put, a win gets the men’s team in while a loss will end its season.
The women’s team opens the doubleheader Friday against Greater Allegheny at 6:00 p.m. with the men following at 8 p.m.
Crazy stat of the week
Getting back to the Division I recruiting scene, only 18 teams have finished with a top-10 recruiting class in at least one of the last five seasons.
Only two, Alabama and Georgia, have both been in the top-10 each of the five years with the Crimson Tide garnering four top classes and Georgia had the other.
The lone local team to make the list, Penn State, is tied for 13th over the five-year period.
