There are some who will say that the Alabama football program is the top sports dynasty going today.

Other will say the New England Patriots while the UConn women’s hoop team would also make the list of potential candidates.

But for anyone who was in Pittsburgh this past weekend at the NCAA Division I wrestling championships, there is no doubt that the Penn State wrestling team has the honor on lockdown.

The Nittany Lions won their eighth national championship in nine years and it wasn’t even close.

How dominant was PSU?

It had the team national championship won before the finals of the individual championships even began.

The Nittany Lions finished with 137.5 team points, a staggering 41 more points than second place Ohio State, which finished with 96.5 points.

Vatakis earns two honors

Monessen graduate Dana Vatakis, a freshman pitcher on the Robert Morris softball team, earned a pair of honors for her effort last week.

She was named the Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week and the Co-Rookie of the Week.

Vatakis threw in five of the team’s seven games last week and had a 2.62 ERA, and over the last 15 innings she pitched she had a 0.47 ERA.

In a win on March 20 at Penn State, she limited the Nittany Lions to one run and five hits.

Robert Morris has its home opener today when Cleveland State comes to town.

What is right in sports

With March Madness down to the Sweet 16, it has been mostly chalk thus far.

One team that lost Sunday was the University of Central Florida when it almost upset top-seeded Duke.

After the game, UCF head coach Johnny Dawkins, who had a legendary career at Duke, spoke to his team in the locker room and the moment was recorded by a UCF staff member.

The emotional video, which can be found at https://ftw.usatoday.com/2019/03/ucf-johnny-dawkins-locker-room-speech-duke, shows what is right about sports.

For all of the negative things that go on in the sports world, the video shows what the relationships between players and coaches are all about.

Yes, coaches are judged by wins and losses, but anyone who has ever coached for the right reasons understands the video completely.

It would not be surprising to see Dawkins replace Mike Krzyzewski at Duke when the time comes that Coach K retires.

Want to know where Dawkins learned part of how to treat players?

Watch the emotional post-game hug between the men that left both in tears.

Yes, Duke advanced, but Dawkins was the most important recruit that Krzyzewski ever signed and their relationship continues today, 33 years after Dawkins graduated.
