Bearcats’ Urcho enters 1,000 club

Landon Urcho hit a milestone and led Bentworth鈥檚 boys basketball team to victory on Tuesday night.
Urcho鈥檚 first-quarter layup put him into the 1,000-point scorers club and he wound up with a game-high 21 points in a 51-45 non-section win over visiting Jefferson-Morgan.
Urcho became the third player under 20-year coach Bob Kennedy to reach the 1,000 mark, joining Jake Chester in 2003 and his son Jon Kennedy in 2008.
鈥淟andon鈥檚 a great player and leader for this team,鈥� Kennedy said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 been a four-year starter and he had the leadership quality at the beginning and grew into that role.
鈥淚t was truly a good feeling not only for him but for me also to witness him getting 1,000. We had some former 1,000-point scorers (Chester and Jon Kennedy) here to present him with the game ball so it was a really special night.鈥�
Troy Wright led the Rockets with 18 points in the loss and Houston Guesman added 14.
The Bearcats, with Urcho leading the way, have opened the season with three straight wins.
鈥淚鈥檓 glad with the way we鈥檝e started,鈥� Kennedy said. 鈥淟ast year we only had nine players but this year I鈥檝e got 17 guys so we鈥檙e able to play JV ball. They鈥檙e a great group of kids.鈥�
Urcho, who sports a 4.0 GPA, was also an outstanding soccer player who helped Bentworth reached the WPIAL playoffs this past season. Urcho earned multiple honors as one of the best goalkeepers in the WPIAL and he holds the team record for shutouts in a season and career.
