Falcons open Bentworth Tourney with 56-28 win

The Brownsville boys steadily pulled away from Carrick Tuesday afternoon to open the Bentworth Holiday Tournament with a 56-28 victory.

The Falcons led 16-3 after the first quarter and increased their lead to 25-14 at halftime. Brownsville then put the game away with a 31-14 advantage in the second half.

Damarion Brown led Brownsville (5-1) with a game-high 15 points. Harlan Davis added nine.

Kelenn Ward scored seven points for Carrick (2-6).

Bentworth 50, West Greene 36 — The host Bearcats built a 13-point halftime lead on their way to an opening day victory in their holiday tournament.

Bentworth (6-2) led 13-10, 31-18 and 35-26 at the quarter breaks.

The Bearcats’ Landon Urcho shared game-scoring honors with 16 points. Cristian May finished with 15 points.

Lane Allison led the Pioneers (1-7) with 16 points.

Carrick and West Greene play in Wednesday’s consolation game at 3:45 p.m. Brownsville and Bentworth meet in the tournament championship at 7:15 p.m.

Jefferson-Morgan 63, Mapletown 42 — The Rockets held a 36-12 advantage in the first and third quarters for a victory in the opening game of the King Coal Lions Christmas Tournament.

Jefferson-Morgan (5-3) led 28-21 at halftime and increased its advantage to 44-25 after three quarters.

The Rockets’ Troy Wright scored a game-high 20 points. Houston Guesman finished with 18 points.

Landan Stevenson led the Maples (2-5) with 17 points.

Girls basketball

Canon-McMillan 56, Southmoreland 12 — The Lady Scots were held scoreless in the first and third quarters for a loss in the opening round of the Cal U Hoopfest.

Canon-McMillan (3-6) raced out to a 19-0 lead after the first quarter.

Jaiden Pierce scored seven points for Southmoreland (1-7). Canon-McMillan’s Nadia Davis finished with 14 points and Madison Clair added 10.

Thomas Jefferson 33, Belle Vernon 32 — The Lady Jaguars held off a fourth-quarter rally for a victory in the Cal U Hoopfest.

Belle Vernon (3-5) led 7-4 after the first quarter, but trailed at halftime, 17-13. Both teams scored eight points in the third quarter and the Lady Leopards had a slight 11-9 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Farrah Reader finished with eight points and nine rebounds for Belle Vernon.

Julie Berberich scored 11 points and Laikyn Flynn added 10 for Thomas Jefferson (6-2).

Belle Vernon plays Aquinas Academy in Wednesday’s game.

Greensburg Salem 58, Uniontown 20 — The Lady Lions led 43-4 at halftime to breeze to a victory in the Mount Pleasant Holiday Tournament.

Azariah Wilson scored six points and A’Kira Wade added five for the Lady Raiders (0-7).

Kait Mankins scored a game-high 18 points for Greensburg Salem (6-1). Ashlan Price added 12.

Hundred (W.Va.) 52, Jeannette 47 — Hundred advanced to the title game in the Mapletown Christmas Tournament with a win against the Lady Jayhawks.
