Local roundup: Bishop Canevin stuns Leopards with late rally

Class A Bishop Canevin rallied in the fourth quarter to pull out a 68-64 win over Class AAAA Belle Vernon in a battle of two of the top boys basketball teams in the WPIAL in the Pittsburgh Basketball Classic at Montour on Sunday.

Quinton Martin turned in a stellar effort in defeat for the Leopards (15-2) with 21 points, 12 rebounds, seven blocked shots and five steals.

Belle Vernon led 15-13, 36-33 and 55-50 at the quarter breaks but the Crusaders outscored the Leps 18-9 in the final frame.

Devin Whitlock also scored 21 points to go along with seven boards and eight assists for the Leopards, and Daniel Gordon had 12 points, five assists and four steals.

Jaden Gales scored 20 points for Bishop Canevin (10-4) which also got 14 points from Kai Spears and 13 points from Kevaughn Price.

Geibel Catholic 54, Jeannette 51 — Trevon White scored a game-high 25 points as the Class A Gators beat the Class AA Jayhawks in a non-section battle at the Shootout at Seton Hill.

Geibel led 20-13 after the first quarter and 27-18 at halftime before Jeannette whittled the gap to 42-41 after three quarters. The Gators held a 12-10 edge in the fourth period.

Jaydis Kennedy added 16 points for Geibel (12-4).

Anton Good scored 17 points for the Jayhawks (9-8) and was followed by Nas Thompson (14) and Isaiah Mallich (11).

Girls basaketball

Indiana, 56, Southmoreland 54 — Class AAAAA Lady Indians needed overtime to nip the Class AAAA Lady Scotties in a non-section clash of two highly-ranked teams at the Shootout at Seton Hill.

The score was tied 21-21 at halftime, Indiana surged to a 35-30 after three periods but Southmoreland rallied to tie it 42-42 in the fourth quarter to force the extra frame. The Lady Indians (13-3) held a 14-12 edge in OT.

Olivia Cernuto led the Lady Scotties (13-3) with 17 points while Delaynie Morvosh and Gracie Spardao tallied 16 points apiece.

Hope Cook paced Indiana with 18 points. Eve Fiala had 16 and Katie Kovalchick chipped in with 11.

Women’s basketball

California 66, Slippery Rock 45 – Junior Dejah Terrell scored 15 points, including the 1,000 of her career as the Vulcans cruised past host Slippery Rock in a PSAC West game on Saturday.

The Vulcans (6-3, 11-3) have won 38 of the last 39 games in the series. Slippery Rock falls to 5-5 in the conference and 10-6 overall.

Terrell, who also grabbed eight rebounds, entered the season with 746 career points in two years at Albright and ranked sixth in NCAA Division III with a single-season school record 608 total points during the 2019-20 campaign. Terrell has averaged 17.5 points over 54 games in her career.

Shauna Harrison added 14 points, including four three-pointers, and also had seven rebounds and five assists.

Waynesburg 68, Franciscan 48 – The Yellow Jackets (3-14, 3-8) grabbed the lead in the first two minutes and never trailed again.

Marley Wolf had 11 points and nine rebounds and Leighton Croft scored 12 points off the bench.

Men’s basketball

California 92, Slippery Rock 83 – Philip Alston scored a game-high 26 points and Zyan Collins added 20 as the Vulcans defeated host Slippery Rock in a PSAC West game for their sixth win in a row.

Alston hit 10 of 15 shots and also contributed 15 rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots.

Brent Pegram scored 14 points for Cal (9-3, 14-4) which also got 11 points from Preston Boswell.

Slippery Rock falls to 6-4 in the conference and 10-6 overall.

Franciscan 84, Waynesburg 74 – The Baron defeated the Yellow Jackets in a PAC game.

Matt Popeck had 23 points and 13 rebounds for Waynesburg (7-4, 11-7) and Nijon Kirkman contributed 23 points and 11 boards.

Franciscan improves to 3-6 the conference and 5-10 overall.
