Lady Cougars fall in WPIAL preliminary round
The Yough girls fell behind in the first quarter and were unable to rally over the final three quarters Thursday night in a 40-32 loss to Beaver Falls in the preliminary round of the WPIAL Class AAA girls basketball playoffs.
Beaver Falls (10-11) advances to play top-seeded Shady Side Academy in the first round on Saturday. The Lady Cougars finish with an overall record of 10-12.
The Lady Tigers led 12-6, 16-14 and 29-23 at the quarter breaks.
Yough’s Mikayla Chewning scored a game-high 13 points. Cali Legzdin and Avina Norman both finished with 10 points for Beaver Falls.
Boys basketball
Laurel 56, Bentworth 46 — The Spartans pulled away in the third quarter for a WPIAL Class AA preliminary round playoff game victory against the Bearcats.
Laurel (7-16) advances to play top-seeded Aliquippa in the first round next Tuesday. Bentworth closes with a 12-11 record.
The Spartans led 33-31 at halftime and then gained a little distance with a 13-6 third quarter. Laurel finished the win with a 10-9 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Landon Urcho paced Bentworth with 18 points. Chris Harper finished with 13 points.
Laurel’s Laban Barker finished with a game-high 24 points. Luca Santini added 10.
