Neshannock fends off Cougars, 53-49

Neshannock held on for a 53-49 victory against Yough Thursday night in the WPIAL Class AAA boys basketball quarterfinals played at North Hills.

The Lancers (18-5) advance to Monday’s semifinals against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, who defeated Shady Side Academy, 53-42.

The Cougars (16-8) play Shady Side Academy Saturday at noon at Keystone Oaks in the consolation round.

Neshannock led 8-6 after the first quarter and 15-12 at halftime. Yough sliced one point off its deficit in the third quarter, and the Lancers secured the win with a 19-17 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Terek Crosby led the Cougars with 20 points. Austin Matthews added 19.

Neshannock’s Jack Glies scored a game-high 27 points, including 22 in the second half.

Girls basketball

St. Joseph 53, Monessen 46 — The Lady Spartans (20-4) advanced to the WPIAL Class A semifinals for the second straight year with a quarterfinal road victory at Monessen.

St. Joseph (20-4) plays top-seeded Union in the semifinals on Monday.

The fourth-seeded Lady Greyhounds (15-6) host Section 2-A rival West Greene on Saturday at noon in the consolation round. The winner advances to the fifth-place consolation game and the loser is ousted.

Monessen led 12-10 after the first quarter, but St. Joseph pulled ahead at halftime, 19-18. The Lady Spartans added to their lead in the third quarter, 37-31.

St. Joseph’s Julie Spinelli scored a game-high 23 points. Emma Swierczewski finished with 16 points. Anna Kreinbrook scored six points and had a double-double with 13 rebounds and 12 blocks.

Sidney Campbell led Monessen with 17 points. Hailey Johnson finished with 12 points.

Union 64, West Greene 20 — The Lady Pioneers run of semifinal appearances came to an end with a road loss to top-seeded Union.

The Lady Scots (16-6) play St. Joseph Monday in the semifinals.

West Greene (13-10) travels to Monessen Saturday at noon in the consolation round. The teams split their two games in Section 2-A play.

Union scored all the points it needed in the first quarter as the Lady Scots ran out to a 27-11 lead. The advantage grew to 44-15 at halftime. Union outscored the Lady Pioneers in the second half, 20-5.

West Greene’s Lexie Six and Marissa Tharp both scored seven points.

Union’s Kylie Fruehstorfer (22), Kelly Cleaver (14), and Zoe Lepri (10) combined for 46 points.

Hockey

Ringgold 4, Elizabeth Forward 3, SO — The Rams clinched the PIHL D2 Blue Division title with a shootout victory against the Warriors at Rostraver Ice Garden.

Ringgold (13-3-0-1-0) sits atop the Blue Division with 27 points with one game remaining.

Elizabeth Forward’s chance a playoff berth took a hit with the loss. The Warriors (7-8-0-0-2) are in fifth place with 16 points, trailing Carrick by one point. Both teams have one game remaining.

Ringgold’s Steven Macheska scored a power play goal 4:59 into the third period to tie the game at 2-2. However, Elizabeth Forward regained the lead four minutes later on Riley Wright’s goal.

The Rams’ LJ Crouch forced overtime with a goal at 13:13.

The Warriors’ Bobby Boord Jr. scored the lone goal of the first period. Elizabeth Forward’s lead doubled with Rhys Medved’s power play goal with five minutes remaining in the second period.

Ringgold’s Kenneth Cadwallader scored with just six seconds left in the second period to make the score, 2-1.

Elizabeth Forward converted 1-of-4 man-advantage opportunities, while Ringgold scored once in five chances.

Ringgold’s Collin Moffett made 32 saves in the win. Elizabeth Forward’s Gabe Myers turned aside 40 shots.

Women’s track & field

PAC Indoor Championships — Waynesburg’s Katherine Henderson was named the PAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Year for the second-straight season after a record-breaking performance in the conference indoor championship.

Henderson won the gold medal in the long jump with her record leap of 18-3¼. She won bronze in the high jump (4-11¾) and triple jump (33-11¼).

Henderson also placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.57 seconds.

Becca Dolce won silver in the weight throw (45-1).

Men’s track & Field

PAC Indoor Championships — Isaiah Mathews had a solid performance for Waynesburg in the conference indoor championship at Youngstown State.

Mathews won the 60-meter dash in 6.97 seconds and placed third in the 200 with a time of 22.37 seconds.

Teammate Kai Herbert finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.90 seconds. Andrew Kasper was eighth in the 5,000 in 16:02.80.

The Yellow Jackets’ Adam Helbling was sixth in the triple jump (39-6¾) and eighth in the long jump (20-6¼). Yough graduate Andrew Kemerer was fourth in the triple jump (40-4¾).

Garrett Hillard placed fifth in the weight throw with a top effort of 43-11¼.
