Lady Pioneers open WPIAL playoffs with 55-33 win
The West Greene girls led 17-3 after the first quarter Monday night and the Lady Pioneers didn’t slow down for a 55-33 home victory over Jeannette in the first round of the WPIAL Class A basketball playoffs.
West Greene (10-13) advances to play at top-seeded Union Thursday night. The win guarantees the Lady Pioneers will play two games, either in the semifinals or the consolation bracket.
The Lady Pioneers increased their lead to 27-11 at halftime and 42-21 after three quarters.
Kendra Tharp paced West Greene with 13 points. Madelyn Roberts scored 12 and Kasie Meek added 11.
Adrianna Allison led Jeannette (8-10) with a game-high 25 points.
Bishop Canevin 53, Mapletown 17 – The Lady Crusaders pulled away in the third quarter for a victory over the visiting Lady Maples in the first round of the WPIAL Class A basketball playoffs.
Bishop Canevin (7-13) will play third-seeded Saint Joseph Thursday in the quarterfinals.
The Lady Crusaders led 22-10 at halftime and doubled their point total in the third quarter with a 22-1 advantage.
Isabella Garnek led Mapletown (6-15) with 10 points.
Bishop Canevin’s Amari Elliott scored a game-high 17 points. Isabella Sysak finished with 13 points.
Boys basketball
Neshannock 66, Mount Pleasant 40 – The Vikings trailed after the first quarter and were unable to rally for a first-round loss to the fourth-seeded Lancers in the WPIAL Class AAA basketball playoffs.
Neshannock (19-3) plays Derry Thursday in the quarterfinals.
The Lancers held quarter leads of 10-6, 25-13 and 41-25 at the quarter breaks.
Luke Rivardo scored 10 points and Connor Pavlocak finished with nine for Mount Pleasant
David Kwiat led Neshannock with a game-high 22 points. Jason Mozzocio finished with 11.
