Falcon wrestlers roll over Gateway, 78-0
The Connellsville wrestling team kept its run of qualifying for every WPIAL team tournament alive Wednesday night as the Falcons rolled over Gateway, 78-0, in a Section 4-AAA road match.
Connellsville improves to 3-0 in the section and 8-2 overall, and wrestles Hempfield next week for the outright section title.
Evan Petrovich (152), Lonzy Vielma (160), Nicholas Rohal (172), Cooper Lembo (189), Christopher Cook (215), Tyler Gallis (285), Chase Sparks (127), Kai Vielma (133), Parker Lembo (139), and Julian Ruggieri (145) all won with pins.
Nolan Rice (107), Landon Lynn (114), and Zachary Franks (121) received forfeits.
Belle Vernon 42, Elizabeth Forward 28 – The Leopards received four forfeits for the difference in a Section 2-AA home victory.
Colby Hibner (133), Austin Hoffman (189), Luke Bryer (215), and Konner Hummel (107) all received forfeits for Belle Vernon (2-2, 3-2). Kole Doppleheuer (145), Elijah Brown (172), and Perry Riggle (285) all won by fall.
Riley Albert (121), Damon Michaels (152), and Dominik Skibicki (160) received forfeits for the Warriors (0-5, 0-5). Vincent Goots won by fall at 127 pounds and Lucas Boyer won by a major decision at 139 pounds.
There was no bout at 114 pounds.
Mount Pleasant 42, Southmoreland 27 — The Vikings came back twice for a key Section 2-AA road victory at Southmoreland.
Mount Pleasant improves to 5-0 in the section and 9-2 overall.
Southmoreland (4-2, 7-4) won the first three bouts with Landon Delara’s 4-3 decision at 172 pounds, and pins by Lewis Mains (189) and Kaden Shannon (215).
Mount Pleasant slowed the opening run with Dylan Pitzer’s first-period pin at 285 pounds and Nick Stabile’s win by fall at 107 pounds.
The Scotties responded with Nicholas Lubecki’s pin at 114 pounds and a forfeit to Micah McGeary at 121 pounds.
The Vikings had another run to close out the match and secure the victory.
Tristan Wtorkiewicz (127) and Duncan Blose (133) started the comeback with back-to-back pins. Joseph Longhi followed with a major decision at 139 pounds to give the Vikings the lead at 28-27.
Jamison Poklembo (145) and Greg Shaulis (152) both had pins to close out the match.
Frazier 52, Albert Gallatin 24 – Rune Lawrence returned to the Commodores’ lineup in a Section 2-AA road win at Albert Gallatin.
Frazier improves to 4-1 in the section and 8-6 overall. The Colonials slip to 1-4 in the section and 4-6 overall.
Lawrence won his 215-bout with a pin in 1:50. Andrew Bandish (152), Ryan Celaschi (160), Austin Wilson (172), and Jackson Angelo (189) also recorded falls.
Tanner Hayes (121), Chase Celaschi, and (127) Tyler Clark (133) received forfeits. Conner Reams won a 9-0 decision at 285 pounds.
Albert Gallatin’s Kage Churby (139) and Alex Kinsley (114) won by forfeit. Colton Kelley won by fall at 145 pounds.
McGuffey 49, Jefferson-Morgan 21 – The Highlanders were tough at home for a Section 1-AA victory.
Chase Frameli (160), Brock Bayles (189), and Landon Heath (285) had pins for the Rockets (3-3, 9-4). Adam McAnany won a 5-1 decision at 215 pounds.
Bentworth 54, Fort Cherry 23 – The Bearcats won six straight bouts to secure a Section 1-AA win against the visiting Rangers.
Bentworth (5-1, 5-1) dropped the first bout with an injury default.
Brian Matthews received a forfeit at 114 pounds to start the run. Drake McClure (121), Chris Vargo (127), Bryce Crowson (139), and Owen Ivcic (145) won by fall, and Ben Luketich (133) received a forfeit.
Racer Lister (160), Vitali Daniels (189), and Alex Rusilko (285) closed out the match with pins.
Ringgold 40, Thomas Jefferson 28 – The Rams won the final six bouts for a Section 3-AAA road victory.
Evan Tolliver (114) and Nico Bove (127) had pins. Justin Steingrabe (121), Braydon Campbell (133), and Maddox Shaw (145) all received forfeits, and Camden Barkey (139) and Tanner Shawl (152) won decisions in the six-bout run.
Owen Conroy won by fall at 215 pounds and Jake Conroy secured a 13-0 major decision for the Rams (2-2, 15-3).
Waynesburg Central 48, Chartiers Valley 27 – The Raiders were tough at home for a Section 5-AAA win.
Waynesburg’s Floyd Huff received a forfeit at 114 pounds.
Cole Phillips (121) Ky Szewcyzk (127) Joseph Simon (133) Xavier Harmon (139) Travis Tedroew (145) Jake Stephenson (189), and Roan Tustin (285) all recorded pins for Waynesburg (1-3, 3-8).
South Park 30, Yough 22 – The Cougars fell on the road for a non-section loss to the Eagles.
Raidon Kuroda (215) and Rocco Zugai (121) won by fall for Yough (1-9). Jacob Boyer secured a major decision at 160 pounds and Dominic Liscotti received a forfeit at 114 pounds.
Girls basketball
Elizabeth Forward 65, Ringgold 9 – The Lady Warriors held the home team to just two points in the first half for a Section 3-AAAA road victory.
Alyssa Terza led Elizabeth Forward (7-0, 14-2) with 15 points. Michelle Jellison finished with 12 points.
Ringgold slips to 0-8 in the section and 3-13 overall.
West Greene 50, Mapletown 23 – The Lady Pioneers pulled away in the second half for a Section 2-A home victory.
West Greene (3-1, 4-8) led 17-9 at halftime and then extended its advantage to 37-16 after three quarters.
Kendra Tharp led the Lady Pioneers with 14 points. Kasie Meek added 13 points.
McKenna Lotspeich scored seven points for Mapletown (2-3, 5-9).
Monessen 58, Avella 14 – The Lady Greyhounds scored all the points they needed in the first quarter for a Section 2-A home victory.
Monessen (4-0, 8-3) led 20-5 after the first quarter and 36-11 at halftime.
Hailey Johnson scored 15 and MyAsia Majors added 12 for the Lady Greyhounds. Ava Frank finished with five points for Avella (0-4, 2-12).
Boys basketball
Trinity 70, Ringgold 49 – The Hillers built a 13-point lead in the first quarter and didn’t look back for a Section 1-AAAAA road victory.
Trinity (2-3, 7-7) held quarter leads of 22-9, 34-20 and 49-38.
Daryl Tolliver led the Rams (0-5, 3-8) with 14 points.
Trinity’s Kaden Hathaway finished with a game-high 25 points. Jonah Williamson (16), Jacob Dunkle (12), and Dante Derubbo (11) also finished in double digits.
Beth-Center 63, Frazier 61 – The Bulldogs outscored the Commodores in the fourth quarter, 17-15, for the deciding points in a Section 4-AA victory.
Beth-Center (2-3, 4-9) led 16-11 after the first quarter and 30-22 at halftime. Frazier (3-3, 8-7) rallied to tie the game at 46 heading into the fourth quarter.
Jason Zellie scored a game-high 26 points for Beth-Center. Brody Tharp finished with 16 points.
Brennen Stewart led Frazier with 22 points. Dailan McManus scored 15 and Trey Whitehead added 12.
Chartiers-Houston 57, Carmichaels 46 – The Mikes trailed by 10 at halftime and were unable to rally in the final 16 minutes for a Section 4-AA road loss.
The Bucs (3-3, 10-5) led 29-19 at halftime.
Colin Andrews led the way for Carmichaels (0-6, 3-11) with a game-high 20 points. Aydan Adamson added 14.
Nate Gregory scored 18, Avery Molek finished with 14 points and Jack Lochran added 10 for Chartiers-Houston.
West Greene 52, Mapletown 39 – The Pioneers held the visitors to 12 points in the second half for a Section 2-A victory.
West Greene (3-1, 8-5) held a 23-12 advantage in the second half to secure the victory.
Lane Allison (17), Patrick Durbin (12), and Parker Burns (10) all scored in double figures for West Greene.
Roger Gradek led Mapletown (1-4, 2-10) with 14 points. Josh Mick scored 10.
Monessen 76, California 34 – The Greyhounds nearly scored all the points they needed in the first quarter for a Section 2-A home victory.
Monessen (4-0, 10-1) held a 32-6 advantage in the first quarter.
Lorenzo Gardner paced the Greyhounds with a game-high 22 points. Devontae Robinson and Tyvaughn Kershaw both scored 12 points.
Caden Monticelli scored 15 points for the Trojans (3-2, 3-11).
Southmoreland 57, Indiana 49 – The Scotties gained distance in the second quarter for a non-section home victory.
Southmoreland (12-2) led 35-23 at halftime. Indiana (6-7) held a 26-22 advantage in the second half.
Ty Keffer (16), Noah Felentzer (12), and Wyatt Richter (10) all scored in double figures for the Scotties.
Stanford Webb poured in a game-high 31 points for Indiana (6-7).
Rifle
Washington 784-53x, Waynesburg Central 779-43x – The Raiders dropped a non-section match to the visiting Prexies at the Waynesburg Ãå±±½ûµØman’s Club.
Waynesburg’s Abbi Kidd was medalist with 100-9x. Emily Burnfield (96-3x), Emma Lawson (98-6x), Wyatt Franklin (97-4x), Joe Withrow (99-8x), Carrigan Henry (97-5x), Aylah Ford (98-7x), and Olivia Sulka (94-1x) rounded out the scoring for the Raiders.
Preston Robinson (100-6x) and Oliva Miller (100-8x) were the top scorers for Washington.
Men’s basketball
California (Pa.) 93, Clarion 80 – Jermaine Hall, Jr.finished with his third double-double of the season to lead the Vulcans to a PSAC-West Conference road victory.
California improves to 8-2 in the conference and 14-2 overall. The Golden Eagles go to 4-6 in the PSAC-West and 6-10 overall.
Hall scored a season-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Hall moved into 25th place all-time with 1,127 points.
The Vulcans’ Zyan Collins and KJ McClurg also scored 21 points.Bryson Lucas finished with 13 points and Antoine Arnett added 10.
Gavin Cote led Clarion with 20 points.
Women’s basketball
California (Pa.) 66, Clarion 62, OT – The Vulcans forced overtime and then outscored the Golden Eagles in extra time for a PSAC-West Conference road victory.
California (7-3, 12-4) tied the game at 57 in the final minute of regulation.
The teams combined for 23 lead changes and 14 ties, and neither team held a lead larger than four points.
California’s Dejah Terrell posted her fifth double-double over the past eight games with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Allycia Harris finished with 10 points.
Malayziah Etheredge led Clarioin (0-10, 0-16) with 18 points.
