Local roundup: Crosby leads Yough past Brownsville, 71-40

Terek Crosby rang up a game-high 28 points as Yough raced out to a big early lead and went on to defeat visiting Brownsville, 71-40, in a Section 4-AAA boys basketball game Saturday.

The Cougars (6-1, 11-4) outscored the Falcons 24-5 in the first quarter and stay in control the rest of the way.

Austin Matthews tallied 23 points for Yough, which pulled within one-half game of first-place Washington.

Trent Wible scored 16 points for Brownsville (1-6, 6-10) which also got 10 points from Harlan Davis.

Latrobe 80, Laurel Highlands 57 – Ian DeCerb scored a game-high 26 points as the Wildcats defeated the visiting Mustangs in a non-section game.

John Wetzel and Max Butler tallied 16 points apiece for Latrobe (8-7).

Ethan Koffler racked up 24 points for Laurel Highlands (2-14).

Monessen 77, Beth-Center 58 – The Greyhounds stormed back from a 22-17 first-quarter deficit to defeat the host Bulldogs in a non-section game.

Monessen (11-1) exploded for 30 points in the second quarter to take a 47-37 halftime lead and held a 58-48 advantage after three quarters before pulling away in the final frame.

Rodney Johnson scored 16 points, Dennis Hawkins followed with 15 and Darryl Ray and Tyvaughn Kershaw chipped in with 12 apiece for the Greyhounds.

Santino Revi hit five 3-pointers in scoring a game-high 21 points for Beth-Center (4-10). Jonah Sussan contributed 10 points.

Waynesburg Central 63, Mapletown 33 – Cole Headlee scored 20 points and the Raiders outscored the Maples 44-10 in the middle two quarters on their way to a non-section victory.

Dane Woods and Alex Vansickle followed with 18 and 13 points, respectively, for Waynesburg (4-10) which picked up its second win in two days after a 2-10 start to the season.

Josh Mick led all scorers with 23 points for the Maples (2-11) who also got 10 points from Roger Gradek.

Girls basketball

Monessen 37, Beth-Center 27 – The Lady Greyhounds fought off the host Lady Bulldogs for a non-section win.

Monessen led 7-6, 17-9 and 25-21 at the quarter breaks.

Na’Jaziah Carter led the Lady Greyhounds (9-3) with 11 points.

Abby Shashura tossed in a game-high 14 points for Beth-Center (7-8).

Waynesburg Central 51, Washington 23 – The Lady Raiders improved to 15-1 with a non-section victory over the visiting Lady Prexies.

Kaley Rohanna tallied 16 points for Waynesburg which also got 14 points from Josie Horne and 10 rebounds from Peyton Cowell.

Kaprice Johnson had 9 points for Washington (7-8) which had won four in a row.

Clairton 76, California 36 – Iyanna Wade ripped the nets for 42 points as the Lady Bears triumphed over the visiting Lady Trojans in a non-section game.

Jamiya Childs and Karma Fuqua had 11 and 10 points for Clairton (12-2).

Hayley Gibson led California (7-8) with 13 points.
