Vikings, Commodores crown two champions in Bedford
Frazier and Mount Pleasant both had two champions Saturday in the Thomas Automotive Wrestling Tournament.
The Commodores’ Rune Lawrence won a 4-1 decision for the 215-pound title. Ryan Celaschi secured a 14-2 major decision at 160 pounds.
The Vikings’ Jamison Poklembo won a 3-2 decision at 145 pounds. Dylan Pitzer had a 5-0 decision for the 285-pound title.
Beth-Center’s Mason Wright (121), Mount Pleasant’s Greg Shaulis (152), and Frazier’s Jackson Angelo (189) won their third-place bouts. Mount Pleasant’s Tristan Wtorkiewicz placed fourth at 127 pounds.
Beth-Center’s Noah Layhue placed fifth at 172 pounds. Frazier’s Tyler Clark defaulted in the 133-pound bout for fifth place.
Mount Pleasant’s Stephen Predajna (160) and West Greene’s Colin Whyte (215) both won their seventh-place consolation bouts.
Mount Pleasant finished sixth in the team standings with 147 points. Frazier was ninth with 129½ points. Beth-Center placed 14th with 99 points, and West Greene was 23rd with 67½ points.
Fred Bell Tournament – Belle Vernon’s Elijah Brown and Perry Riggle finished third in the tournament held in Grove City.
Brown went 5-1 with two pins at 170 pounds, while Riggle was 7-1 with six pins at 285 pounds.
Gio Weightman placed sixth at 138 pounds with five falls for a 5-3 record. Austin Hoffman finished seventh with a 6-2 record.
Ultimate Warrior Tournament – Bentworth’s Chris Vargo finished first at 127 pounds, while teammate Vitali Daniels was second at 189 pounds in the tournament in West Branch.
Girls basketball
Brownsville 48, Yough 39 — The Lady Falcons defeated Yough for the second time in three days for a Section 4-AAA road victory.
Brownsville (3-3, 10-7) trailed 13-8 after the first quarter, but rallied for a 23-19 halftime lead. The Lady Falcons outscored the home team in the second half, 25-20, to secure the win.
Skyler Gates led Brownsville with 21 points. Ava Clark scored 14 and Zhariah Reed added 13.
Autumn Matthews led Yough (1-5, 8-9) with a game-high 22 points.
Monessen 40, West Greene 25 — The Lady Greyhounds held visiting West Greene scoreless in the fourth quarter to rally for a key Section 2-A victory.
Monessen (14-3) remains alone atop the section standings with a 6-0 record. West Greene goes to 4-2 in the section and 7-10 overall.
The Lady Pioneers led 25-23 heading into the fourth quarter. Monessen held a 17-0 advantage in the final eight minutes for the win.
Hailey Johnson scored a game-high 14 points for Monessen. Madison Johnson added 12.
Madelynn Roberts led West Greene with 10 points.
Boys basketball
North Hills 68, Belle Vernon 67 — The home team rallied in the fourth quarter for a non-section win against the Leopards.
Belle Vernon (9-5) trailed at halftime, 39-36, and rallied for a 64-61 lead after three quarters.
The Leopards’ Zion Moore scored a game-high 28 points. Alonzo Wade finished with 16 points.
Eric James (22), Logan Johnson (15), and Nathan Schanbacher (10) finished in double figures for North Hills.
Baldwin 65, Uniontown 55 — The Highlanders finished strong for a win over the Red Raiders at North Hills.
Baldwin (13-4) held a slim 44-43 lead entering the fourth quarter. The Highlanders then outscored Uniontown in the final quarter, 21-12, to secure the win.
K’Adrian McLee paced Uniontown (15-2) with 18 points. Jamire Braxton finished with 13 points.
Baldwin’s Nathan Richards scored a game-high 25 points. Nathan Wesling finished with 12 points and Caden Cherico added 10.
Derry 66, Mount Pleasant 50 — The Trojans scored 24 points in the third quarter to pull away for a win over the Vikings in the Shootout at Seton Hill University.
Derry (10-5) outscored Mount Pleasant in the second half, 41-24.
Connor Pavlocak scored 14 points for the Vikings (6-10). Derry’s Nate Papuga finished with a game-high 23 points, Stanley Rajkocich contributed 17 points and Brady Angus added 12.
Yough 54, Monessen 33 — Terek Crosby and Austin Matthews combined for 43 points to lead the Cougars to a victory against the Greyhounds in the Shootout at Seton Hill University.
Crosby scored a game-high 25 points for Yough (14-4) and Matthews added 18. Daryl Ray scored eight points for Monessen (13-3).
Women’s basketball
California (Pa.) 66, Mercyhurst 63 — The Vulcans needed overtime, but the extra effort paid off PSAC West Conference victory at Mercyhurst.
The Vulcans improve to 9-3 in the conference and 14-4 overall after their third-consecutive win. Mercyhurst goes to 8-4 in the PSAC West and 12-6 overall.
Mercyhurst had a 15-2 run in the fourth quarter to move into a 51-50 lead. California regained the lead at 55-53 with 1:55 left in the game, but the Lakers tied the game with 1.2 seconds remaining.
Mercyhurst led 63-62 with 1:34 left in overtime, but the Vulcans’ Dejah Terrell finished a three-point play with 37 seconds remaining for the lead.
Mercyhurst led 17-9 after the first quarter. California rallied in the second quarter to forge an 18-18 tie, but the Lakers fought back for a 30-26 halftime lead.
California went on a 14-point run in the third quarter, leading to a 48-36 lead at the end of the quarter.
Terrell scored a game-high 24 points. Sierra Bermudez added 11 points.
Mercyhurst’s Bailey Kuhns scored 15 points.
Saint Vincent 70, Waynesburg 58 – The home team pulled away in the second half for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference victory over the Yellow Jackets.
Kalista Friday led Waynesburg (4-5, 3-11) with 14 points. Tori Wesolowski finished with 11 points.
Alana Winkler (14), Emily Cavacini (13), Camden Bashor (11), and Ashley Lippold (10) scored in double figures for Saint Vincent (8-6, 10-9).
Men’s basketball
California (Pa.) 77, Mercyhurst 60 — Zyan Collins scored a season-high 26 points to lead the 17th-ranked Vulcans to a PSAC West Conference road victory over the Lakers.
California improves to 10-2 in the PSAC West and 16-2 overall. Mercyhurst slips to 5-7 in the conference and 9-11 overall.
The Vulcans’ KJ McClurg finished with 19 points, while Jermaine Hall, Jr., added 10.
Mercyhurst’s Aidan Reichert scored 15 points.
Waynesburg 63, Saint Vincent 47 – The visiting Yellow Jackets upended the first-place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
The Yellow Jackets go to 7-7 in the conference and 10-9 overall. The Bearcats are 12-2 in the PAC and 17-2 overall.
Jansen Knotts led the way for Waynesburg with a game-high 19 points. Antone Baker finished with 12 points and Korey Mitchum added 10.
Dev Ostrowski scored 15 points, Jaden Gales finished with 13, and Osyon Jones added 11.
