Pierce earns academic award
Duquesne freshmen Mia Pierce and senior Hannah Seitzinger were among the six members of the women’s track & field team to be recognized on the Atlantic 10 Conference Outdoor All-Academic and All-Rookie teams.
Seitzinger, a Belle Vernon graduate, won the silver medal in the 800 and anchored the 3,200 relay team to a gold medal in the Atlantic 10 Conference championship. Seitzinger earned academic honors with a 4.0 GPA in the Physician Assistant Studies program. She is a three-time honoree on the Indoor All-Academic Team.
Seitzinger holds the school record in the 800 and qualified for the NCAA Championship.
Pierce, a Laurel Highlands grad, finished third in the conference meet in the javelin with a throw of 150-4, the best throw among first-year athletes. The distance is the fifth-best in program history.
Pierce recorded a long of 45.83m (150′ 4″) at Bucknell, where she placed third, to top the A-10’s rookie leaderboard. The mark ranks fifth all-time at Duquesne.
Baseball
Marra, Conte honored on academic team
California (Pa.)’s Payton Conte, Santinto Marra, Ryan Callahan, Jake Kramer and Michael Valente were named to the College Ãå±±½ûµØ Communicators Academi All-District Team.
A junior designated hitter from California, Conte holds a 3.58 GPA in exercise science.
Marra recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting with a minor in finance with a 3.63 GPA.
Colonial 3 post two wins
Colonial 3 posted Fayette County American Legion Baseball League victories over Waynesburg, 12-0, last Wednesday and Smithfield-Fairchance, 7-1, last Friday.
Hunter Pelehac led the charge in the win over Waynesburg with a pair of doubles and a single. Brock Alekson also had three hits.
Pelehac also picked up the win with five scoreless innings on one walk and five strikeouts.
Colonial 3 pulled away against Waynesburg with six runs in the top of fourth inning with Pelehac, Alekson, Jeremiah McDonald, Rylan Johnson, Ben Vojacek and Aiden Hardy all driving in one run.
Colonial 3 broke the game against Smithfield-Fairchance open with six runs in the sixth inning.
Tyler Monack drove in two runs with a double and Dailan McManus, Hardy, Alekson and Hunter Smiley all had a run-scoring single.
Monack drove in three runs on two hits.
Logan Brown earned the win with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Losing pitcher Evan Weakland finished with two hits and Cyrus Potkul drove in Smithfield-Fairchance’s lone run.
