Lady Warriors鈥� Morgan leapfrogs into second in WPIAL golf final

Elizabeth Forward junior Mia Morgan was tied for fourth place entering Monday’s WPIAL Class AAA Individual Golf Championship final round at Butler Country Club.
Morgan, the defending champion, navigated the damp conditions to leapfrog two golfers for the silver medal.
Morgan shot 4-over 74 in the final round for a two-round total of 155. Morgan scored 81 in last week’s first round at Willowbrook Country Club.
Peters Township’s Ellie Benson won the district title with a two round total of 5-over 147.
“I wanted to leave with gold, silver or bronze,” said Morgan. “It was a dogfight to get into second place.
“I didn’t play my best golf (in the first round). The past is the past. I don’t like to dwell on the past.”
Play was not delayed, so the golfers persevered through wet conditions.
“It rained during my practice round Sunday, so I had an idea how to approach the course,” explained Morgan.
Pine-Richland’s Siena Smith was a shot behind Morgan for third place.
“I was keeping her score. I had an idea where I was,” said Morgan. “After No. 15, the girl in second made a few mistakes.”
Morgan tied for seventh place in last year’s PIAA final.
Elizabeth Forward’s Sydney Boyd finished 28th with a two-round total of 199. The Lady Warriors are coached by Laurel Highlands graduate Justin Korona.
Waynesburg Central’s Avery Davis finished in a three-way tie for the last two spots into the PIAA Championship in the Class AA final, but lost out on the second playoff hole.
Davis, Greensburg C.C.’s Kennedy Kelly and Nehannock’s Maddie Desanti tied for eighth place with a two-round score of 193.
Southmoreland’s Kendall Campbell finished 13th with a two-round total of 197. Mount Pleasant’s Morgan Miller tied for 15th with 204.
