Trojans earn share of Section 5-AA cross country title
The California boys swept the final Section 5-AA meet of the season Tuesday afternoon for a share of the section title.
The Trojans defeated host Serra Catholic, 15-50, Southmoreland, 15-50, Steel Valley, 24-33, and South Park, 21-34, to finish with a 9-1 section record. California earned a share of the title because Belle Vernon defeated Greensburg Central Catholic, 22-33, on Tuesday and California’s win over Belle Vernon earlier in the season. Belle Vernon also defeated Calvary Chapel Christian School, 15-46.
California’s Carter Kent finished first overall with a time of 17:34.4.
Girls cross country
Serra Catholic 15, California 50 – Serra Catholic was the only squad to field five runners for a Section 5-AA home meet sweep.
California’s Lucia Meiss placed second overall with a time of 22:52.1.
Belle Vernon 21, Greensburg Central 36; Belle Vernon 15, Calvary Chapel Christian School 50 – The Lady Leopards closed the regular season with a Section 5-AA meet sweep.
Brooklyn Steeber was the first Belle Vernon girl to finish.
Boys soccer
Bentworth 14, Chartiers-Houston 0 – The Bearcats led 8-0 at halftime to clinch a share of the Section 2-A crown.
Ryan Moessner and Adam Moessner both scored hat tricks for Bentworth (6-0, 12-0). Caden Hackinson and Aiden McMurray both scored two goals, while Billy Moyer, Dillan Colbert and Austin Hollier all netted one goal apiece.
“I am very proud of the team and the seniors on this team for taking the momentum we built last year and putting their own stamp on it,” said Bentworth coach Nicholas Malarbi.
Beth-Center 6, Greensburg C.C. 1 – Parker Amos scored three goals and assisted on two others to lead the Bulldogs to a section 2-A victory over the Centurions.
Nekoda Bundy, Ryder Roule and Hunter Bobbs scored one goal each for Beth-Center (3-2-0, 8-2-1).
Charleroi 15, Greensburg Salem 0 – The Cougars shut out the Golden Lions for a Section 4-AA victory.
Dylan Klinger scored a hat trick for Charleroi (10-0, 11-0). Landon Barcus and Blake Pendo both scored two goals.
Elizabeth Forward 3, McGuffey 1 – Three different players scored for the Warriors in a Section 3-AA victory.
Luca Valerio, Ethan Childers and Aidan Davis scored for Elizabeth Forward (8-1-1, 9-3-1).
Franklin Regional 14, Uniontown 0 – The Panthers shut out the Red Raiders for a Section 3-AAA victory.
Danny Cristano scored four goals for Franklin Regional (7-1, 8-2). Uniontown slips to 0-9 in the section and 2-10 overall.
Mount Pleasant 5, Yough 0 – The Vikings spread the offense around with five players scoring a goal in a Section 4-AA win over the Cougars.
Aidan Johnson, Jarett Garn, Grant Zahrobsky, Tyke Snyder and Bryson Bankosh scored in the first half for Mount Pleasant (9-1, 10-4). Goalkeeper Tyler Kurtz preserved the shutout.
South Fayette 4, Laurel Highlands 0 – The Mustangs trailed 3-0 at halftime and were not able to rally for a Section 2-AAA loss to the Lions.
South Fayette improves to 6-4 in the section and 6-7 overall. Laurel Highlands goes to 3-7-0 in the section and 5-7-1 overall.
Southmoreland 6, Derry 3 – Jack Smith scored two goals in the Scotties’ Section 4-AA win over the Trojans.
Landon Delara, Liam Smith, Hunter Ryan and Ben Schaeffer all scored one goal for Southmoreland (6-3, 8-5).
Thomas Jefferson 7, Albert Gallatin 0 – The Jaguars shut out the Colonials for a Section 2-AAA win.
Brayden Miller scored a hat trick for Thomas Jefferson (7-1-2, 8-1-2). Albert Gallatin slips to 1-8 in the section and 1-9 overall.
Waynesburg Central 4, Brownsville 2 – Camden Wellington spotted the Falcons the early lead, but the Raiders rallied for a Section 4-AA victory.
Isaac McCartney tied the match midway through the first half, and then Waynesburg (3-6-1, 3-7-1) closed out the match with two goals from Brendan Cole and another by Dylan Pester.
Brownsville goes to 2-7-1 in the section and 2-9-1 overall.
Girls volleyball
Brownsville 3, Washington 0 – The Lady Falcons swept past Washington for a non-section home win.
Brownsville (6-7) won by the scores, 25-17, 26-24, 25-14.
Payton Evanchak (11 assists, 4 kills, 7 service points), Skyler Gates (11 kills, 7 blocks, 9 service points), Ashley Evanchak (9 service points, 3 aces, 21 digs), and Abigayle Thomas (10 service points) led the Brownsville attack.
Frazier 3, Geibel Catholic 0 – The Lady Commodores shut out Geibel for a Section 4-A victory.
Frazier won by the scores, 25-10, 25-6, 25-6.
Addison Schultz led Frazier (6-0, 8-3) with 20 kills.Maddie Salisbury finished with 12 kills.
Jefferson-Morgan 3, Uniontown 0 – The Lady Rockets won the non-section match in three sets against the Lady Raiders.
Jefferson-Morgan (5-6) swept to victory by the scores, 25-20, 25-10, 25-13.
The Lady Rockets’ Alisa Long had double-double with 26 digs and 12 kills. Isabelle Bazzoli finished with 16 kills, while Emille Bazzoli had 18 digs. Mia Bertagnolli had 18 assists and Leighana Goodend added 17 assists.
Maggie Campbell had five kills, four digs, six assists and three aces for Uniontown. Ava Livingood added five blocks, three kills and two aces.
Waynesburg Central 3, Bentworth 0 – The Lady Raiders remained undefeated with a straight-sets victory over Bentworth.
Waynesburg (11-0) rolled to victory by the scores 25-22, 25-14 and 25-21.
Ani Cree led the Lady Raiders with 11 kills. Bailey Rafferty had 20 assists and eight digs.
Bentworth’s Chelse Dindal had a team-high eight kills. Sofia Gaussa and Olivia Telegraphis both had 11 digs. Zoie McDonald finished with 16 assists.
