Local roundup: Brownsville tops Cougars for first win
Jaiden Praster scored a game-high 20 points, including two late clinching free throws, as Brownsville defeated Carlynton, 66-62, for its first victory of the season at the Charleroi Tournament in boys basketball action on Monday.
It was the first win for Joe Hough, a former Falcons assistant, as head coach at Brownsville.
The Falcons (1-7) led 24-11 after the first quarter and 37-25 at halftime. The Cougars (3-7) rallied and took a lead in the third quarter which eventually ended with the score tied 56-56.
Brownsville out-scored Carlynton 20-16 in the fourth quarter to secure the win, including two key baskets by Kaden Wimmer and two 3-pointers by Cameron Phillips down the stretch.
“Huge for the kids,” Hough said of the victory. “They found a way to battle at the end after getting up early and then falling behind. This is big because we had lost a couple tough ones lately where I thought we battled hard and played well.”
Wimmer finished with 18 points, Phillips added 10 points and Jalen Blair chipped in with eight points.
Isaac Anker had 13 points to lead Carlynton, which also got 12 points apiece from Maurice Segnonou and Dewayne Fisher.
South Park 68, Uniontown 67 — The Eagles edged the Red Raiders at the Charleroi Tournament, handing Uniontown its fourth close loss of the season.
The Red Raiders (4-6) also have suffered overtime losses to Belle Vernon and McKeesport and a two-point defeat to Penn-Trafford.
Isaac Ellsworth sank eight 3-pointers in racking up 31 points for Uniontown. Cooper Hochendonner matched Ellsworth with 31 points for the Eagles.
The score was tied 17-17 after the first quarter and 31-31 at halftime before South Park (7-1) inched out to a 51-50 advantage after three. Both teams tallied 17 points in the fourth quarter.
Free throws were a key factor in the game with South Park going to the charity stripe 30 times and converting 16. Uniontown made seven of 10 foul shots.
Luke Scarff followed Hockendonner with 27 points for the Eagles.
Chase White had 12 points for Uniontown and Cam Dugan added nine points.
Peters Township 73, Belle Vernon 57 — Dylan Donovan scored 26 points, including six 3-pointers, in the host Indians’ win over the Leopards at the Peters Township Tournament.
Jake Wetzel followed with 15 points for the Indians (6-2) who also got 13 points from Jayder Greco.
Dane Dougherty led Belle Vernon (7-4) with 18 points and Luca Ghilani had 12.
Bentworth 62, West Greene 27 — Ben Hays scored 32 points in the host Bearcats’ victory over the Pioneers at the Bentworth Tournament.
Levi Urcho added 10 points for Bentworth (6-2).
Landen Hill paced West Greene (1-6) with 11 points and Matt Wassil had seven points.
Carrick 37, Waynesburg Central 30 — Carrick triumphed over Waynesburg in a defensive battle at the Bentworth Tournament.
Carrick led 9-6 after one quarter and 15-10 at halftime before Waynesburg took a 22-21 advantage in the third.
Carrick used a 16-8 edge in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.
Keswan Johnson scored 11 points for Carrick (6-4).
Cole Headlee had 12 points and three assists for Waynesburg (4-5), which also got nine rebounds from Dane Woods and seven boards from Austin Surber.
Washington 74, California 27 — Tristan Reed scored 25 points as the Prexies topped the Trojans at the Delvin Miller Memorial Tournament at Monessen.
William Callan tallied 20 points for Washington (4-5).
Alan Davis tallied 18 points to lead the way for California (0-7).
Connellsville 59, Ligonier Valley 55 — Lucas Harwood had 22 points in the Falcons’ win over the Rams at the Greensburg Salem Tournament.
Christian Thomas added 20 points for Connellsville (3-6).
Michael Wisniewski led Ligonier Valley (4-5) with 27 points and Michaels Vangulish-Graver had 13.
Other scores: East Allegheny 52, Southmoreland 25; Greensburg Salem 74, Mount Pleasant 40; Trinity 62, Albert Gallatin 24.
Girls basketball
Geibel Catholic 83, Trinity Christian 32 — Mallory Clemmer poured in a game-high 35 points and Emma Larkin rang up 26 as the host Lady Gators remained unbeaten by rolling past Trinity Christian in the Geibel Catholic Tournament.
Geibel scored 50 points in the first half.
Janiah Darnell added 12 points for the Lady Gators (9-0).
Elena Myers led Trinity Christian (3-2) with 23 points, including five 3-pointers.
West Greene 55, Jefferson-Morgan 18 — Kendra Tharp recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds in the Lady Pioneers’ non-section win over the visiting Lady Rockets.
West Greene clung to just a 14-12 lead after the first quarter but took control with a 17-4 advantage in the second and pulled away from there.
Katie Brudnock and Jillissa Yeater each tossed in 12 points for the Lady Pioneers (8-2).
Two players accounted for all of the scoring for J-M (5-5) with Beautiful Medlen tossing in 10 points and Brelynn Wood tallying eight.
West Mifflin 46, Mount Pleasant 32 — Nerual Parm scored 10 points as the Lady Titans (3-6) beat the host Lady Vikings at the Mount Pleasant Tournament.
Mount Pleasant led 11-10 after one quarter but West Mifflin used a 15-5 advantage in the second to take a 25-16 halftime lead and was up 37-24 after three.
Danica Trainer and Grace Arrigo each tallied 10 points for the Lady Vikings.
Belle Vernon 62, Allderdice 53 — Isis Almyty had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Lyla McConnell totaled 16 points, two 3-pointers, six rebounds and three assists as the Lady Leopards fought off the Lady Dragons at the Cal U Holiday Tournament.
Allderdice led 16-12, 29-24 and 46-42 at the quarter breaks before Belle Vernon closed with a flourish, out-scoring the Lady Dragons 20-7 in the fourth to pull out the win.
Bailey White scored a game-high 30 points for Allderdice (7-3) and was followed by Rhyan Sledge (11) and Seena Tashon (10).
Abby Russell added 14 points for the Lady Leopards (7-3) who also got 13 rebounds and four assists from Aubrey Brown and five boards and three blocked shots from Saylor Lee.
Connellsville 55, Greensburg Salem 46 — Sara Mickens tossed in a game-high 26 points in the Lady Falcons’ victory over the Lady Lions at the Mount Pleasant Tournament.
Peyton Petrone added 18 for Connellsville (3-7).
Mya Heasley had 20 points for Greensburg Salem (4-5) and Sophie Berkerleg added 10.
