Local roundup: Leopards’ Moore moves up scoring ranks in win

Zion Moore scored a game-high 24 points and moved up the Belle Vernon career scoring list as the Leopards romped over visiting West Mifflin in a Section 3-AAAA boys basketball game Monday night.

Moore, who played at Ringgold his freshman year before transferring to Belle Vernon, upped his career scoring total to 1,849 points, passing Jacob Dudzinski for second place on the Leopards’ list. Vince Graham is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,394 points.

Moore also had seven assists and hit a pair of 3-pointers against the Titans.

The win kept Belle Vernon (6-1, 11-4) one game behind Derry (5-0, 8-4) in the loss column in the section standings.

The Leopards exploded to a 34-12 lead in the first quarter and led 55-29 at halftime.

Travor Kovatch followed right behind Moore with 23 points, including four 3-pointers, for Belle Vernon, which also got 12 points from Curtis Wade.

Daven Reynolds led West Mifflin (2-4, 3-12) with 16 points.

Girls basketball

Laurel Highlands 68, Yough 17 – Aierra Jenkins led a trio of Lady Mustangs in double figures with a game-high 20 points in a Section 3-AAAA win over the visiting Lady Cougars.

Miya Harris followed with 17 points and Aryianna Sumpter had 11 for Laurel Highlands (5-2, 10-4) which led 44-13 at halftime.

The Lady Mustangs maintained their third-place spot in the standings behind first-place Elizabeth Forward (5-0) and South Park (5-1).

Hailey Bock paced Yough (3-3, 8-5) with six points.

Albert Gallatin 46, Brownsville 41 – Mya Glisan scored 18 points as the Lady Colonials rallied from a 16-11 halftime deficit to knock off the visiting Lady Falcons in a non-section game.

The score was tied 10-10 after one quarter before Brownsville moved out to a five-point lead by intermission but AG (5-7) outscored the Lady Falcons 14-6 in the third quarter to go up 30-27. The Lady Colonials held a 16-14 edge in the fourth quarter.

Ellie Seese added 10 points for Albert Gallatin.

Skylar Gates tied for game-high honors with 18 points for Brownsville (6-5) which also got 14 points from Ava Clark.

Carmichaels 38, Jefferson-Morgan 32 – Ke’lani Chun tallied 15 points to propel the Lady Mikes past visiting J-M to their first win of the season in a Section 3-AA game.

The score was tied 8-8 after one quarter but Carmichaels (1-4, 1-12) used a 12-6 edge in the second to go up 18-14 at halftime and held a 29-24 advantage after three.

Brelynn Wood tied for game-high honors with 15 points for the Lady Rockets (0-4, 1-12).

Waynesburg 55 Central, Charleroi 33 – Avery Davis rang up 18 points and Peyton Cowell followed close behind with 17 as the Lady Raiders triumphed over the host Lady Cougars in a Section 3-AAA game.

Waynesburg led 24-6, 34-15 and 50-22 at the quarter breaks.

Mya Smith chipped in with 10 points for the Lady Raiders (3-3, 8-5).

Eden Smith led Charleroi (0-6, 0-15) with 12 points and Emma Skobel added 10.

West Greene 72, Avella 41 – Kendra Tharp poured in a game-high 22 points and Madelyn Roberts tallied 20 in the Lady Pioneers’ Section 2-A victory over the visiting Lady Eagles.

West Greene led 20-10 after the first quarter but Avella whittled the gap down to 23-20 in the second quarter before the hosts closed the half on an 18-5 run to take a 36-26 advantage into halftime.

The Lady Pioneers then put the game away by outscoring the Lady Eagles 28-11 in the third quarter with Tharp and Roberts tallying 10 points apiece in the frame.

Kylee Davis contributed 10 points for the Lady Pioneers (3-2, 8-2).

Ava Franks scored 15 of her team-high 18 points in the first half for Avella (2-5, 6-8).

Beth-Center 45, California 28 – Callie Dorsey led the way with 17 points in the Lady Bulldogs’ Section 3-AA victory over the host Lady Trojans.

Beth-Center led 9-7 after the first quarter then used a 17-2 advantage in the second quarter to take a 26-9 halftime lead.

Violet Trump added 10 points for the Lady Bulldogs (4-1, 9-6).

California falls to 2-2 in section play and 5-4 overall.

Frazier 52, Jeannette 42 – Malana Burton scored 18 points in the Lady Commodores’ Section 4-AA victory over the host Lady Jayhawks.

Frazier (1-3, 5-8) led 15-6 after the first quarter and 39-16 at halftime before Jeannette stormed back with an 18-2 advantage in the third quarter to get within 41-34 but the visitors hung on for the win.

Clea Bozek (11) and Chloe Hargar (10) also hit double digits for the Lady Commodores.

Navarah Smith had a game-high 22 points for the Lady Jayhawks (0-5, 4-9).

Belle Vernon 48, Southmoreland 20 – Aubrey Brown scored 17 points as the Lady Leopards beat the visiting Lady Scotties in a Section 3-AAAA game.

Saylor Lee added 14 points for Belle Vernon (4-3, 6-8) which led 10-12 at halftime then took complete control with a 19-5 edge in the third quarter to go up 39-17.

Ashley Seder had six points for Southmoreland (1-6, 3-11).

Bishop Canevin 53, Mapletown 26 – Kya Cooley sank five 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 21 points in the Lady Crusaders’ Section 2-A win over the visiting Lady Maples.

Isabella Sysak tallied 14 points for Bishop Canevin (3-3, 8-4).

Treslee Weston topped Mapletown (0-7, 2-13) in scoring with six points.

Trinity 73, Uniontown 18 – Sutton Williamson and Bentley Layhue each had 15 points in the Lady Hillers’ Section 4-AAAAA win over the visiting Lady Raiders.

Vittoria Emerich chipped in with 11 points for Trinity (3-3, 8-4).

Emily Myers led Uniontown (1-5, 4-9) with eight points.

Mount Pleasant 51, Ringgold 32 – Ryleigh Drzal scored 16 points as the Lady Vikings topped the Lady Rams in a Section 3-AAAA game.

Mount Pleasant (2-5, 2-11) led 14-7, 28-17 and 37-22 at the quarter breaks.

Jada Gernot tossed in a game-high 17 points for Ringgold (0-5, 6-6).
