Local roundup: Gates sparks Lady Falcons in win at Uniontown
Skyler Gates rang up 27 points and Brownsville used a big second quarter to defeat host Uniontown, 57-49, in a non-section girls basketball clash between Fayette County rivals Wednesday night.
Ava Clark followed with 14 points for the Lady Falcons (9-6) who also got nine points on a trio of 3-pointers from Ciara Horabik. Zhariah Reed accounted for the rest of Brownsville’s points with seven.
Brownsville led 15-13 after the first quarter then out-scored the Lady Raiders (5-11) 17-7 in the second quarter to go up 32-20 at halftime.
The Lady Falcons bumped the margin up to 13 points early in the second half before Uniontown fought back to within 45-34 by the end of the third quarter.
Brownsville coach Patty Columbia called a timeout with her team up 49-41 in the fourth quarter. The Lady Raiders scored the next bucket to whittle the gap to six but could get no closer.
“We have been struggling a bit as of late maintaining late-game leads,” Columbia said. “We started to panic a little as Uniontown cut into the lead but we called a timeout and calmed our girls down.
“I was proud of how they regained their composure.”
Emily Myers and Lyric McLee each scored 13 points to pace the Lady Raiders who also got eight points from freshman Charley Murtha.
Men’s basketball
Waynesburg 91, Bethany 89 – Anthone Baker came through at both ends of the court in the final seconds of the Yellow Jackets’ PAC victory at Bethany.
Baker hit a tie-breaking layup with 8.7 seconds to give Waynesburg a 90-88 lead and Bethany’s Bryson Bishop was fouled with four seconds left. Bishop made the first free throw to cut the lead to one but missed the second. Josh Coffeld gathered in the offensive rebound for the Bison and attempted a potential game-winning shot but it was blocked by Baker.
The Yellow Jackets’ PJ Suggs made one of two free throws with one second left to set the final score.
Baker and Suggs each wound up with 25 points to lead Waynesburg (5-7, 7-10) which also got 14 points and 11 rebounds from Rayshod Hooper and 11 points from Jalen Goins.
The Yellow Jackets led 38-34 at halftime.
Jess Roller and Cole Dailey paced the Bison (1-10, 6-10) with 13 points apiece.
Boys swimming
Mount Pleasant 80, Ringgold 50 – David Mutter (200 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Cody Fusco (200 IM, 500 freestyle), Joseph Gardner (100 breaststroke, 50 freestyle) and Seth Painter (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke) each won two events as the Vikings swam past the host Rams. Mount Pleasant’s Noah Lahm hit the WPIAL qualifying mark in diving.
Girls swimming
Mount Pleasant 80, Ringgold 50 – Lily King was victorious in the 200 freestyle and the 100 freestyle and combined with teammates Kiersten O’Connor, Lainey Brown and Maddie Barrick to win the medley relay in the Lady Vikings win at Ringgold.
O’Connor (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and Riley Shinsky (100 butterfly, 500 freestyle) were also double individual winners for Mount Pleasant which also got first-place performances from Brown in the 100 breaststroke, Ella Paul in diving and Barrick in the 200 IM.
