Cal’s Conte, Marra earn PSAC West honors
PennWest California senior first baseman Payton Conte was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season on Tuesday while his father, Mike Conte, took home the Coach of the Year honor.
Payton Conte, a California Area High School graduate, batted .372 with six home runs, 11 doubles, 44 RBIs, 42 runs and six stolen bases. He was joined on the PSAC West First Team by Laurel Highlands graduate Santino Marra, a senior second baseman who led Cal with a .400 batting average while also totaling 13 doubles, four home runs, 34 RBIs, 34 runs and eight stolen bases.
Other First Team members for the Vulcans were outfielder Ryan Callahan, starting pitcher Michael Valente and reliever Jake Kramer.
Mike Conte was voted the Coach of the Year for the ninth time after guiding the Vulcans to a 34-11 regular-season record and a second-place finish in the PSAC West.
Cal was scheduled to begin PSAC tournament play Wednesday with a game against West Chester at Millersville.
