Local roundup: Strimel, Dolan both score 30 as Gators roll past Falcons
Evan Strimel and Set Dolan each poured in 30 points as Geibel Catholic defeated host Brownsville, 95-65, in a non-section boys basketball clash Friday.
The Gators (7-4) exploded for 32 points in the first quarter in taking a 14-point lead and were up 51-31 at halftime and 67-46 after three.
Anthony Nickischer chipped in 14 points for Geibel.
Kaden Wimmer led the Falcons (1-8) with 16 points and was followed by Cameron Phillips with 15 and Jalen Blair with 14.
Beth-Center 84, South Side 73 — Parker Amos and Brayden Hull combined for 50 points in the Bulldgos’ non-section win at South Side Friday.
Beth-Center led 20-14 after the first quarter and 42-38 at halftime before moving out to a 61-52 advantage after three and hung on from there.
Amos had 26 points and Hull, who made a trio of 3-pointers, scored 24 for the Bulldogs (6-4) who also got 17 points apiece from Jason Zellie and Tyler Kurowski.
AC Corfield tossed in a game-high 34 points for the Rams (2-6).
Serra Catholic 59, Mount Pleasant 40 — Brayden Graham scored 27 points as the Eagles (6-4) beat the Vikings (3-8) in a non-section game Saturday.
Serra Catholic led 17-10 after the first quarter then took complete control by out-scoring Mount Pleasant 24-3 in the second for a 41-13 halftime advantage.
South Park 89, California 32 — Cooper Hochendoner scored 26 points and Luke Scarff had 22 as the Eagles soared past the Trojans in a non-section game Saturday.
South Park (9-2) led 17-7 after the first quarter before erupting for 35 points in the second in going up 52-18 at halftime.
Alan Dennis paced California (0-10) with 14 points.
Girls basketball
Waynesburg Central 64, Beth-Center 32 — Emma Blair scored a game-high 20 points and Tess Pauley added 15 in the Lady Raiders’ non-section victory over the visiting Lady Bulldogs Saturday.
Waynesburg (9-1) led 21-7, 43-17 and 53-26 at the quarter breaks.
Chatham Knight also hit double figures for the Lady Raiders with 10 points while Peyton Cowell and Addonae Johnson each contributed eight points.
Kyleight McDaniel dropped in 11 points for Beth-Center (5-7) and Isabella Fischer followed with 10 points.
Mount Pleasant 47, Ligonier Valley 17 — Ryleigh Drzal scored 13 points and the Lady Vikings didn’t allow a point in the second half of a non-section win over the visiting Lady Rams Saturday.
Mount Pleasant led 14-7 after the first quarter and 22-17 at halftime before ringing up 25 unanswered points over the final two frames.
Morgan Gesinski and Grace Arrigo both tallied 12 points for the Lady Vikings (5-6).
Adleigh Myers led Ligonier Valley (3-7) with seven points.
College men’s basketball
PennWest California 91, Kutztown 68 — Jordyn Buchanan hit six 3-pointers in scoring 22 points as the Vulcans extended their winning streak to eight by defeating visiting Kutztown in a PSAC crossover matchup Saturday.
The Vulcans (6-0, 9-4), who led 48-35 at halftime, also got 13 points from Ray Joshua and 12 from Laurel Highlands graduate Keondre DeShields who made a pair of 3-pointers.
Yahmir Satterfield and Jalen Bryant each had 20 points for Kutztown (0-5, 2-7).
College women’s basketball
Waynesburg 77, Pitt-Greensburg 46 — Mia Henkins scored 16 points as the Yellow Jackets breezed past the host Bobcats in a non-conference game Saturday.
Macie Justice followed with 11 points while Kalista Friday, Clara Paige-Miller and Tori Wesolowski each tallied nine points for Waynesburg (5-6).
Joselyn Bielak led UPG (1-11) with 24 points and Ca’Mari Walden had 10.
Kutztown 70, PennWest California 66 — Ariana Smuda’s basket inside gave Kutztown a 67-66 lead with 58 seconds remaining and the visiting Golden Bears held on for a PSAC crossover win Saturday.
Olivia Smelas hit one of two free throws to push Kutztown’s lead up to two with 24 seconds on the clock and Belle Quinn sank two foul shots to clinch it with 13 seconds left.
Cal (4-2, 8-8) led 16-14 after the first quarter but the Golden Bears (3-2, 6-5) took a 35-30 halftime advantage and were up 54-52 after three.
Leila Hurley had 18 points and Smuda followed with 10 for Kutztown.
Kennedy Bankett led Cal with 19 points and Alicia young added 14 points.
