Local roundup: Bonus points key in Rockets’ victory over Bulldogs

Jefferson-Morgan earned five victories via fall and received two forfeits to defeat Beth-Center, 42-31, on Wednesday night in Section 3-2A play at Beth-Center High School.

The Rockets improved to 3-0 in the section and 10-0 overall, while the Bulldogs fell to 2-2 in section action and 7-5 overall.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Austin Grandel (107), Caleb Dulaney (114), Colton Humphreys (152), Dominic Sowden (172) and Landon Heath (285) planked their opponents.

James Dulaney (133) and Geno Orlandi (160) won by forfeit.

Beth-Center’s Alex Medlen (121), Michael Curtis (139) and Noah Layhue (215) won by fall.

The Bulldogs’ Malachi Peak edged Alek Palko, 3-2, after the Rocket sophomore was bumped up a weight. Teammates Shane Cronin (127) and Mason Wright (145) won by technical fall.

Belle Vernon 45, Elizabeth Forward 29 — Five Leopards pinned their opponents in a non-section triumph at Elizabeth Forward High School.

Brayden Broadwater (114), Rylee Doppelheuer (127), Colby Hibner (160), Eric Adamec (172) and Elijah Brown (215) provided Belle Vernon with all the points it would need in winning the dual meet.

Skylar Gush earned an 18-13 decision at 189 for the visitors.

The Leopards’ Eric Granato (145) and Vander Raczkowski (152) won by forfeit as Belle Vernon improved to 6-4.

Bentworth 48, Brownsville 24 — The Bearcats’ Bobby Lemley, Brock McClure, Brayden Taggart and Quinten Carter won by fall to lead their team to a Section 3-2A triumph over the Falcons at Brownsville Area High School.

Bentworth’s Brian Mathews (107), Drake McClure (139), Leo Shrader (160) and Owen Ivcic (172) received forfeits.

Brownsville’s Kody Gates (152) and Devin Drake (189) pinned their opponents. Teammates Anthony Dulaney (133) and Braiden Scheitlen (145) won by forfeit.

McGuffey 51, West Greene 15 — The Highlanders remain unbeaten in Section 1-2A action following a victory over the Pioneers at McGuffey High School.

West Greene’s Colin Whyte won by fall in 1:20 at 285 pounds. Teammate Jacob Rizor planked his opponent at 2:42 in 114.

The Pioneers’ Noah Collins earned an 8-1 decision over Lane Ealy at 133.

The Highlanders’ Tucker Main (121), Clayton Ealy (127), Lucas Barr (139) and Aaron Supler (172) won by fall.

McGuffey’s Victor Bonus recorded a technical fall, 17-2, in 2:17 at 152. Teammate Garrett Newman won by major decision, 12-1, at 160.

Kash Main earned a 12-6 decision at 189 for the Highlanders (2-0, 13-1). McGuffey’s John Turek edged Charlie Stoneking, 2-1, at 215.

Jaxie Wright (107) and Emmett Wolfe (145) won by forfeit for the home team.

Avella 60, Frazier 11 — The Commodores’ Jonah Erdely and Derek Diamond earned victories, but the Eagles were able to pull out a non-section triumph at Avella High School.

Erdely earned an 18-3 technical fall at 152 pounds. Diamond recorded a fall in 1:54.

Avella’s Xander Winters (107), Dustin Mace (114), Jordan Moore (121), Gage Samol (127), Jeremiah McClain (133), Adam Ware (139), Thomas Chilzer (145), Dominic Muzzi (189) and Holden Fischer (285) won by forfeit. Chas Rush won by fall in 1:30 at 160 for the Eagles.

Trinity 51, Waynesburg Central 12 — The Hillers earned a Section 2-3A victory at Waynesburg Central High School.

Trinity improved to 3-0 in section play and 10-1 overall.

The Hillers’ Grant Nalepka-Heyman recorded a fall in 1:40 at 145 pounds. Trinity’s Landon Ault (127), Jacob Wright (139) and Behr Bruckner (172) won by technical fall.

The Hillers’ Edrick Williams edged Lincoln Fisher, 1-0, at 285. Teammate Gavin Bricker topped Floyd Huff, 11-7, at 121.

The Raiders’ Roan Tustin won by fall in 3:47 at 215. The home team’s Easton Gifford received a forfeit at 114.

Trinity’s Dominick Canali (133), Carson Gerba (152), Luke Poland (160) and Teagan Barr (189) all won by forfeit.

Boys basketball

Fairmont 88, Brownsville 45 — Darrell Claybrook made four 3-pointers in scoring 34 points as the host Polar Bears defeated the Falcons in a non-section game.

Fairmont led 12-9, 33-13 and 54-28 at the quarter breaks. The Polar Bears hit 11 3-pointers, including six in the fourth quarter when they scored 34 points.

Jaylen Deuesenberry and Carter Gower each contributed 11 points for Fairmont (5-4), which also got 10 points from Greg Johnson.

Cameron Phillips led Brownsville (1-12) with 12 points and was followed by Jaiden Praster (11) and Kaden Wimmer (9).
