Local roundup: Dean stars in Waynesburg win over Brownsville
Jackson Dean racked up a 21 points, 11 rebounds and six assists as Waynesburg Central knocked off visiting Brownsville, 76-47, in a Section 4-3A boys basketball game Friday night.
The Raiders (4-2, 6-10) moved into a second-place with Ligonier Valley, one game ahead of Charleroi and two games in back of Southmoreland.
The Falcons battled Waynesburg to an 11-11 tie after one quarter and trailed just 33-30 at halftime, but the Raiders surged to a 56-38 in the third quarter and stayed in control the rest of the way.
Cole Headlee tallied 16 points and Dane Woods totaled 15 points and 12 rebounds for Waynesburg, which also got 14 points from Austin Surber.
Max Dieudonne paced Brownsville (0-5, 1-12) with 16 points.
PENN TRAFFORD 66, UNIONTOWN 48 — Ethan McDonald tossed in 20 points as the host Warriors took control early and staved off the Red Raiders in a Section 1-5A game.
Penn Trafford (6-4, 8-9) moved into a third-place tie with McKeesport. Uniontown (5-5, 9-8), which saw its four-game winning streak come to an end, is now alone in fifth place, one game ahead of Latrobe and two in front of Laurel Highlands for the final playoff spot in the section.
Penn Trafford led 15-6, 30-23 and 51-40 at the quarter breaks.
Zach Feldmans had 12 points and Payton Mastro chipped in with 11 for the Warriors.
Isaac Ellsworth sank four 3-pointers in scoring 20 points to lead Uniontown, which also got 10 points from Cam Dugan.
Ellsworth enters Tuesday’s home game against McKeesport needing 11 points to reach 1,000 for his career.
LATROBE 61, LAUREL HIGHLANDS 55 — Ian DeCerb and Robert Young each scored 13 points as the host Wildcats held off the Mustangs for a Section 1-5A win.
Latrobe (4-6, 6-10) led 12-10, 30-23 and 46-42 at the quarter breaks.
Luke Martin’s driving basket got Laurel Highlands within 53-50 with 1:33 left but the Mustangs could get no closer.
Martin led Laurel Highlands (3-7, 9-8) with 19 points, Kayden Smith had 13 and Tyrone Burton added 10.
McKEESPORT 84, ALBERT GALLATIN 53 — Lamont Perkins led a group of five players in double figures with 16 points for the Tigers in their Section 1-5A victory over the visiting Colonials.
McKeesport (6-4, 9-7) led 18-14, 36-25 and 58-40 at the quarter breaks.
Jayir Bray and Aaron Reeder followed Perkins with 13 points apiece, Brian Jones had 12 points and Malaccchi Ogrosky added 11.
Elliott Sines scored a game-high 23 points for Albert Gallatin (0-10, 2-14) and Mekhi Belt dropped in 17 points.
DERRY 48, BELLE VERNON 46 — Stanley Rajkowski sank a jump shot as time expired to give the host Trojans a dramatic overtime victory over the Leopards in a Section 3-4A clash.
Rajkowski, who scored 20 points, also hit a 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter to tie the game and force OT.
The win pulled Derry (7-2, 11-6) into a first-place tie with Belle Vernon (7-2, 11-8), one-half game in front of Elizabeth Forward (6-2).
The Leopards led 12-10 after the first quarter and 25-20 at halftime before the Trojans clawed back to even at 33-33 after three. Both teams notched 13 points in the fourth quarter.
Neither team scored in the extra frame until Rajkowski’s winning basket.
Luca Ghilani made four 3-pointers in pacing Belle Vernon with 16 points. Vincenzo Francia followed with 11.
The Leopards hurt themselves at the foul line, converting on just three of 10 free throws.
SOUTHMORELAND 75, CHARLEROI 60 — The host Scotties shook off a slow start then put away the visiting Cougars in a Section 4-3A game.
Ty Whoric poured in a game-high 29 points for first-place Southmoreland (6-0, 10-7), which maintained its two-game lead in the second.
The Scotties trailed 19-16 after the first quarter but surged to a 40-34 halftime lead and took a 55-47 edge into the final frame.
Luke Stinnett (15) and Brock Pritts (14) also hit double digits for Southmoreland.
Xavion Thomas led Charleroi (3-3, 9-9) with 16 points and Jackson Keranko had 12.
JEFFERSON-MORGAN 63, MAPLETOWN 15 — Jeremiah Robertson scored 14 points in the Rockets’ Section 3-2A victory at Mapletown.
Jefferson-Morgan (8-1, 15-1) exploded to a 30-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
Triton Farabee added 10 points for the Rockets.
Kaleb Evosevich led the Maples (0-10, 0-17) with 10 points.
SERRA CATHOLIC 88, GEIBEL CATHOLIC 39 — The Eagles soared to a 30-9 lead in the first quarter and extended their advantage from there in cruising past the visiting Gators in a Section 2-A game.
Evan Strimel poured in a game-high 31 points, accounting for all but eight of Geibel’s points.
Tyler Sapida won one of four Serra players in double figures with 21. He was followed by Brayden Graham (18), D.J. Deliman (13) and Kris Sharp (12).
The loss dropped Geibel (2-4, 9-8) into a fourth-place tie with St. Joseph, who the Gators host on Tuesday.
The second-place Eagles (5-1, 10-6) remain one game in back of Neighborhood Academy.
BURGETTSTOWN 64, CARMICHAELS 60 — Blake Neal and Bryce Speer both scored 20 points as the Blue Devils survived a fourth-quarter comeback attempt by the visiting Mikes in claiming a Section 3-2A victory.
Burgettstown (2-8, 5-13) led 19-7 after the first quarter and 35-21 at halftime. Carmichaels (2-7, 3-12) outscored the hosts 18-15 in the third and 21-14 in the fourth but fell four points short.
Lance Duran contributed 12 points for the Blue Devils.
Stephen Lewis dropped in 17 points to lead the Mikes, who also got 15 points from Alex Toth and 10 from Scott Maskil.
CLAIRTON 76, FRAZIER 42 — Donte Wright scored 20 points in the visiting Bears Section 1-2A win over the Commodores.
Brandon Murphy followed with 17 points for Clairton (8-1, 12-1), which also got 10 points each from Taris Wooding 10 and Michael Ruffin 10.
Kolby Stewart recorded a double-double for Frazier (2-9, 6-11) with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Austin Stewart added 11 points.
LIGONIER VALLEY 70, MOUNT PLEASANT 45 — The Rams opened up a 35-15 halftime lead with a 19-3 advantage in the second quarter on their way to a Section 4-3A win over the host Vikings.
Michael Wisniewski made five 3-pointers in scoring 23 points for Ligonier Valley (3-2, 8-7). Michael Vargulish-Graver added 17 points and Greyson Daugherty chipped in with 12.
Kade Hutchinson was the leading scorer for Mount Pleasant (1-4, 5-12) with 14 points.
GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC 71, CALIFORNIA 40 — Tommy Dlugos scored 16 points as the Centurions (4-6, 4-13) defeated the visiting Trojans (0-10, 0-17) in a Section 1-2A game.
Lucca Denis (14) and Carson Kramer (13) also hit double digits for GCC.
Ben Ziolecki topped California in scoring with 10 points.
FORT CHERRY 63, BETH-CENTER 44 — Connor Vansickle tallied 27 points and the host Rangers rode a huge third quarter to a Section 3-2A win over the visiting Bulldogs.
Beth-Center held leads of 14-11 after the first quarter and 29-27 at halftime before Fort Cherry erupted to a 28-2 advantage in the third to go up 55-31.
Tyler Wolfe added 13 points for the third-place Rangers (7-3, 9-7).
Brayden Ozohonish topped fourth-place B-C (5-5, 9-8) in scoring with 16 points and Jason Zellie tossed in 11.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
CAMERON 40, WEST GREENE 36 — Kendra Tharp rang up 21 points and 14 rebounds but the Lady Pioneers couldn’t recover from a 15-point halftime deficit in suffering a non-section loss at Cameron.
The Lady Dragons (5-4) led 14-4 after one quarter and 26-11 at halftime but West Greene (11-5) rallied to within 33-24 after three and slice the gap to three in the fourth quarter but could get no closer.
Kendra Thomas helped Cameron survive the Lady Pioneers’ comeback by sinking three free throws in the final minute.
The Lady Dragons’ Macy Bertram scored 11 of her team-high 13 points in the first half. Thomas followed with 10 points.
MONESSEN 48, CARMICHAELS 28 — Raynia Lyons scored 21 points as the Lady Greyhounds triumphed over the host Lady Mikes in a non-section game.
Monessen (7-9) led 10-6, 17-8 and 33-17 at the quarter breaks.
Na’Jazian Carter added 12 points and Madison Johnson had 10 for the Lady Greyhounds.
Bentley Lukacs and Joselyn Carter each tossed in eight points for Carmichaels (1-15).
BETHEL PARK 41, UNIONTOWN 28 — The Lady Black Hawks rode a big third quarter to a Section 4-5A win over the Lady Raiders on Thursday.
Bethel Park (5-4, 11-6) was up 13-8 after the first quarter and 22-14 at halftime, then used a 17-4 advantage in the third to take a commanding 39-18 lead.
Uniontown (2-6, 9-8) held a 10-2 edge in the fourth quarter.
Bella Coleman led the Lady Black Hawks with 20 points.
Aierra Jenkins paced the Lady Raiders with 16 points.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
PENNWEST CALIFORNIA 86, SLIPPERY ROCK 75 — Bryson Lucas rang up a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebound in the Vulcans’ PSAC West win at Slippery Rock on Saturday.
The victory kept Cal (10-1, 13-5) in a first-place tie with Gannon.
The Vulcans held a 43-31 advantage at halftime and led by as many as 17 in the second half.
Jordyn Buchanan scored 17 points for Cal, which also got 14 points from Brayden Reynolds, 12 points, six rebounds and three assists from Antoine Arnett and eight points, nine rebounds and two blocks from Dalman Alexander. Laurel Highlands graduate Keondre DeShields and Dalman Alexander each added eight points.
The Rock (6-5, 13-6) put five players in double figures. Kerwin Prince led the way with 16 points and was followed by Dame Givner (14), Brady Mayo (12), RJ Sledge (11) and Sheick Samoura (10).
WESTMINSTER 86, WAYNESBURG 78 — DJ Harrell scored a game-high 30 points, including a free throw that put the Titans ahead to stay with 7:51 left, as Westminster defeated the host Yellow Jackets in a PAC battle Saturday.
Jaxon Hendershott’s 3-pointer 30 seconds later pushed put the Titans up by four and they eventually built their led to 12 before settle on an eight-point victory.
Drew Weir added 19 points for Westminster (6-2, 11-6), which also got 13 points from Nick Ryan and 12 from Lucas Stanley.
Casey Keesee and Aiden Blake each rang up 24 points for the Yellow Jackets (2-6, 6-13).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
WAYNESBURG 86, WESTMINSTER 74 — The Yellow Jackets overcame a slot start to put away the Titans in a PAC game Saturday.
Westminster took a 22-14 advantage in the first quarter and led by as much as nine in the second but Waynesburg fought back to take a one-point lead late in the half and Kalista Friday made it 40-37 with a layup just before the buzzer.
The Yellow Jackets (3-5, 7-10) surged to a 54-39 lead midway through the third quarter and the Titans never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
Friday totaled 19 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and six steals, all game highs, for Waynesburg. Mia Henkins added 17 points, Julz McFadden tallied 16 points and Kara McFadden and Macie Justice added 13 points apiece for the Yellow Jackets, who also got 11 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, and six points from Waynesburg Central graduate Clara Paige Miller.
Grace Cano led the way for Westminster with 18 points and was followed by Maddie Syka (12), Katie Maryo (11) and Kennedy Arison (10).
SLIPPERY ROCK 74, PENNWEST CALIFORNIA 61 — The Rock out-scored the visiting Vulcans 24-14 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a PSAC West victory Saturday.
Slippery Rock (4-7, 6-11) led 18-15, 29-26 and 50-47 at the quarter breaks.
Sophia Hook scored 20 points and Mairan Haggerty followed with 17 points off the bench for the Rock, which also got 15 points from Alyssa Gillin and 14 from Iyanna Wade.
Hope Hawkins tied for game-high honors with 20 points for Cal (5-6, 9-12). Kennedy Bankett was next with 12 points and Trinity Balog added 10.
BOYS WRESTLING
BENTWORTH 38, ALBERT GALLATIN 34 — The Bearcats recorded three pins and got a technical fall and two major decisions in defeating the visiting Colonials in a non-section match Thursday.
Bentworth’s pins came from Drake McClure at 139, Bryce Crowson at 145 and Owen Ivcid at 172.
Bentworth’s two major decisions were by Bobby Lemley at 114 and Brock McClure at 121.
The Bearcats received one forfeit win and while Albert Gallatin had two.
The Colonials picked up pins by Gavin Morris at 107 and Jaymes Sutton at 160, got technical falls from Kage Churby at 152 (17-0) and Colin Rockwell at 285 (15-0).
