Firestone sparks Hopwood in win over Charleroi
Matthew Firestone singled in Andino Vecchiolla in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Hopwood Village Plaza a 4-3 walk-off win over visiting Charleori in Fayette County Baseball League action on Sunday.
Hopwood (8-3), which has won six straight, rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to tie the game with three runs in the fourth inning.
Firestone also earned the win after coming on in relief in the first inning. He tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing five hits and one walk with eight strikeouts.
Vecchiolla led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and, one out later, stole second and advanced to third on an error. Santino Marra was intentionally walked but Firestone made the decision backfire by lining a single into left field as Vecchiolla trotted in with the winning run.
Jared Hough had two hits and two RBIs, Chad Petrush also singled twice and Chase Sankovich contributed a hit and an RBI for Hopwood.
Charleroi (5-5-1) scored three times in the first inning when Spencer Behrendt, Manny Stitch and S Allen were each hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Petrush started Hopwood’s fourth-inning rally with a single, Justin Brestensky was hit by a pitch and Anthony Piasecki bunted the runners out. Hough then stroked a two-run single, stole second and scored on Sankovich’s single to right to tie it at 3-3.
Losing pitcher Josiah Fisher surrendered three runs on 10 hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
