California recorded the first victory in its inaugural girls flag football season by defeating host Clairton, 20-6, on Wednesday.

The Lady Trojans’ defense forced four turnovers with two interceptions by Bella Smith and one each by Lila Mitchell and Meadow Meier, who also caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Hayley Gibson.

Gibson also threw a TD pass to Mitchell and Aubrey Cellurale added a 40-yard scoring run with two minutes left in the game to seal the win.

California was two for three on 2-point conversion tries with Gibson tossing one each to Mitchell and Cellurale.

The Lady Trojans are at Brentwood on Monday.

UNIONTOWN 48, SOUTH FAYETTE 6 — Lyric McLee and Aierra Jenkins were trying to out do each other in the Lady Red Raiders’ victory over the Lady Lions in Section 2 play at South Fayette.

McLee was 16 of 25 for 212 yards and threw five touchdown passes without an interception, while Jenkins had 12 receptions for 165 yards and five scores. She also pulled in two 2-point conversions. Jenkins was 2 for 2 for 52 yards and a touchdown. McLee gained 35 yards on two carries and pulled in both of Jenkins’ passes.

Jenkins had five interceptions and four tackles, while McLee led the team in stops with six, and had two interceptions.

Uniontown (2-1) will host Brentwood at Bill Power Stadium on April 8 at 4 p.m.

SOFTBALL

UNIONTOWN 5, BELLE VERNON 1 — Winning pitcher Emmaleigh Noah hit a solo home run as the Lady Raiders upended the visiting Lady Leopards in a Section 2-4A game.

Juliet White also homered for Uniontown.

Noah gave up 10 hits but just one run with one walk with six strikeouts.

Uniontown scored two runs in the first and never trailed again.

Belle Vernon sliced the lead to 2-1 on Bella Williams’ home run in the third but the Lady Raiders pushed across three runs in the bottom of the inning for a four-run lead.

Sincere Dunlap doubles and singled for the Lady Raiders, who also got two hits apiece from Katie White and Lauren White.

Ava Jones had three hits for Belle Vernon, which also got two hits each from Addy Newman, Taylor Beech and Williams.

WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 6, WOODBRIDGE 0; WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 4, KENSTON 3 — Gina Tedrow twirled her second consecutive no-hitter in the Lady Raiders’ win over Woodbridge (Ohio) in the first of two non-section games played at Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

Tedrow walked three and struck out 17.

Kolbi Rastoka contributed a double, single and two RBIs for Waynesburg.

Tedrow also was the winning pitcher against Kenston, throwing a six-hitter with 18 strikeouts and also hit a game-tying, two-run double in a four-run sixth inning. Eva Pester followed with a run-scoring single to put the Lady Raiders ahead to stay.

CARMICHAELS 10, FRAZIER 0 — Joselyn Carter had two hits, including a three-run homer, and four RBIs in the Lady Mikes’ five-inning, non-section win over the visiting Lady Commodores.

Winning pitcher Bailey Barnyak tossed a two-hitter with one walk and six strikeouts and was 3 for 3 with an RBI.

Carys McConnell smacked a two-run homer for Carmichaels (2-2), which also got two hits and an RBI from both Kenlee Machesky and Avery Voithofer, a double and a single from Payton Plavi and a pair of singles from Bentley Lukacs.

Emme Travalena doubled and Addison Hiles singled for Frazier’s only hits.

BETH-CENTER 16, MONESSEN 6 — Kendall Welsh was 3 for 3 with a triple and six RBIs and was the winning pitcher as the Lady Bulldogs thumped the Lady Greyhounds in a non-section game.

Emmalee Liberatore added two singles, two RBIs and three runs for Beth-Center.

Mya Kelly had three hits for Monessen.

JEFFERSON-MORGAN 5, MCGUFFEY 2 — Gabriella Marmie had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs in the Rockets’ non-section win at McGuffey.

Ava Wood added a double, single and RBI and Kelsey Vessels also doubled for J-M, which also got a single and an RBI from Ashlynn Snyder.

Winning pitcher Emilee Bazzoli allowed two runs on six hits with three walks and nine strikeouts.

MOUNT PLEASANT 15, CHARLEROI 5 — Jenna Whipkey was 5 for 5 with a home run, two doubles and five RBIs, and Sadie Poole also knocked in five runs with a pair of home runs and a double in the Lady Vikings’ six-inning, non-section win over the host Lady Cougars.

Winning pitcher Danica Trainer surrendered two earned runs on nine hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts and also had two doubles and two RBIs.

Mount Pleasant also got three hits, including a double, and an RBI from Kendra Brunson, a double and a single from Chloe Borelli and two hits apiece from Autumn Jurkovic-Kuzma and Emma Miller.

Ariana Blouse was 3 for 3 with a double for Charleroi.

LAUREL HIGHLANDS 10, OAKLAND CATHOLIC 0 — Winning pitcher Payton Senge threw a one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts and hit one of the Fillies’ five home runs and had two RBIs in a five-inning Section 2-A win at Oakland Catholic.

Chloe Komacko also had a home run and two RBIs for LH, which got solo home runs from Kayla Howell, Payton Rambo and Emme Cavaliere as well.

OTHER SCORES: Thomas Jefferson 5, Albert Gallatin 0; Yough 14, California 2.

BASEBALL

BROWNSVILLE 7, WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 2 — Benjamin Vojacek went 3 for 3 with an RBI and winning pitcher Nash Petroff tossed a one-hitter as the host Falcons knocked off the Raiders in a Section 4-3A game.

Petroff walked three and struck out 11 and didn’t allow an earned run while also contributing a single and an RBI.

Jeremiah McDonald had two hits and scored three runs, and Dominic Capan doubled for Brownsville, which also got one hit and one RBI from both Hunter McDonald and Cooper Cetera.

Losing pitcher Jarett Tretinik allowed three earned runs on 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts in also going the distance, and had the lone hit for Waynesburg.

CONNELLSVILLE 2, LAUREL HIGHLANDS 1 — Caden Matthews had two hits, including a solo home run, and Gradin Hodge singled twice and drove in a run as the visiting Falcons edged the Mustangs in a non-section clash.

Chris Johnson also had two hits and combined with Xander Newmeyer to pitch a six-hitter for Connellsville.

Johnson gave up one run on two hits with four walks and six strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. Newmeyer got the win in relief by tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings in which he allowed four hits and one walk with six strikeouts.

Noah Lion singled and knocked in the lone run for Laurel Highlands, which also got two hits from Sevi Vecchiolla.

Losing pitcher Nick Crouch surrendered one earned run on seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in four innings.

BELLE VERNON 12, UNIONTOWN 3 — Chase Petrosky and Vincenzo Francia each had a double, two singles and an RBI in the host Leopards’ Section 2-4A victory over the Red Raiders.

Zach Plymire added two hits and three RBIs, and Nate Kostelnik and Vito Francia each contributed a single and two RBIs for Belle Vernon, which also got a double from Connor Bergman.

Winning pitcher Maddox Ceccarelli surrendered three runs on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Lane Smiley had two hits and an RBI and Chandler Myers singled and drove in two runs for Uniontown, which also got a double from Lucas Mihalko.

CARMICHAELS 11, MAPLETOWN 1 — Connor Lapana pitched a five-inning four-hitter with three walks and eight strikeouts as the Mikes cruised past the visiting Maples in a Section 1-A game.

Chase Ankrom had a double and two RBIs and Cooper Richards also doubled and knocked in one run for Carmichaels, which also got a single and an RBI from both Owen Ray and Ryder Krieg, and an RBI from Dominic Yazzani.

Cameryn Shaffer had a double and an RBI for Mapletown.

AVELLA 3, WEST GREENE 1 — The Pioneers out-hit the Eagles, 10-1, but could only muster one run in suffering a Section 1-A loss.

Chas Rush had an RBI double and winning pitcher Bryce Wright struck out 11 in five innings. Brayden Fuller pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.

Gavin Roberts, Darren Knight and Jackson Grimes had two hits apiece for West Greene, which also got a double from Dylan Huhges.

Losing pitcher Joel Rizor allowed three runs on four hits with six walks and three strikeouts in four innings.

GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC 4, JEFFERSON-MORGAN 0 — Winning pitcher Tyler Samide struck out 12 in tossing six scoreless innings as the host Centurions blanked the Rockets in a Section 1-A game.

John Woodward had two hits for Jefferson-Morgan, which also got a double from Brayden Ellsworth.

Losing pitcher Drew Adams allowed just one earned run on seven hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

OTHER SCORES: Freeport 13, Mount Pleasant 2; Bentworth 3, Frazier 0; Deer Lakes 11, Southmoreland 7; Fort Cherry 16, Beth-Center 0.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

MOUNT PLEASANT 81, LIGONIER VALLEY 69 — Damien Ohler and Bryson Bankosh each won two individual events to help the Vikings defeat the Rams in a Section 8-2A meet.

Ohler was first in the 800 (2:22.62) and the 1,600 (5:16.59) and Bankosh top the field in the high jump (6-0) and long jump (21-3).

Other individual winners for Mount Pleasant were Tyke Snyder in the 200 (24.50), Kyle Hoffer in the 300 hurdles (45.22), Gage Sowers in the pole vault (14-0), Andrew Brodak in the shot put (38-8) and Isaiah Taylor in the triple jump (40-1.5).

The Vikings also triumphed in the 1,600 relay (3:43.33).

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

MOUNT PLEASANT 97, LIGONIER VALLEY 49 — Colbie Potoka was victorious in the javelin and shot put with throws of 76-7 and 22-0 as the Lady Trojans beat the Lady Rams in a Section 8-2A meet.

California also recorded first-place finishes by Caitlyn Fullman in the 100 (14.17), Savannah Lynch in the 200 (31.44), Addie Czekaj in the 400 (1:11.84), Kaylea Voke in the 1,600 (6:27.45), Victoria Tepper in the high jump (4-4) and Brooklyn Ulery in the pole vault (5-0).

The Lady Trojans also won the 400 relay (57.18), 1,600 relay (4:46.88) and 3,200 relay (11:43.97).

BOYS TENNIS

MOUNT PLEASANT 4, SOUTHMORELAND 1 — The Vikings topped the Scotties in a Section 1-2A match.

Austyn Gross defeated Lucas Hardik, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Luke Hauser beat Ben Schaeffer at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0, for Mount Pleasant.

The Vikings took both doubles matches with Hauser and Austin Duvall rallying past Christian Cook and CJ Ohler in tight battle at No. 1, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), and Derrick Smith and Colten Smith triumphing over Drake Pacolay and Enzo Vargo at No. 2, 6-4, 6-2.

Southmoreland’s lone win came at No. 3 singles with Reed Pollard coming back to beat Nico Pisula, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.
