Brownsville tops LH as Clark, Senge duel

Runs were scarce as expected when pitching aces Ava Clark of Brownsville and Payton Senge of Laurel Highlands hooked up in a non-section softball clash of playoff teams on Thursday.

The Lady Falcons came out on top, 3-1, as Clark threw a complete-game five-hitter with one walk and 15 strikeouts.

Brownsville (10-7) pushed across single runs against Senge in the first and third and went up 3-0 with a run off reliever Izzy Coleman in the fifth.

Laurel Highlands scored its lone run in the fifth inning on Kayla Howell’s RBI single.

Senge surrendered two runs on three hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in four innings. Coleman allowed one run on two hits with one walk and four strikeouts in three innings.

Jordyn Davis had two of Brownsville’s five hits and Emma Leigh Bailey added a single and an RBI.

Howell accounted for two of the Mustangs’ three hits.

Laurel Highlands finished the regular season with a 10-5 record.

ELIZABETH FORWARD 16, CONNELLSVILLE 15 – The Lady Warriors and Lady Falcons combined for 30 hits and five home runs with Elizabeth Forward holding of for victory in a non-section slugfest between playoff teams.

“I was happy to play EF because I know they’re a good team,” Connellsville coach John Burd said. “I was pleased with some of the things we did but unhappy that we had some mental mistakes and a few errors.

“I knew the game didn’t really mean anything so I ended up pulling some or our starters.”

The host Lady Falcons used six players off its bench.

Addy Nigut knocked in three runs with a home run and a double, Hannah Evans also homered in driving in three runs and Aubri Cimba doubled twice and had two RBIs for the Lady Warriors (17-3), who are the top seed in Class 4A.

Elizabeth Forward also got a double and two singles from Julia Resnik, a double and a single from both Sophie Pasinsky and Claire Balint and two hits from Samantha Malek.

Kalyn Cole blasted a pair of home runs with a single in bringing in five runs and Kaylee Roadman had three hits, including a double and a home run, and four RBIs for Connellsville (12-8), which also got two hits and two RBIs from Addison Smith, a triple and a single from Cali Leichliter and three hits from Rylee Dreves.

The Lady Falcons rallied from deficits of 3-0 and 10-5 and held a 13-10 lead after five innings. Elizabeth scored three runs in both the sixth and seventh to seize a 16-13 advantage and Connellsville pushed across two final runs in the bottom of the seventh but fell one run short.

UNIONTOWN 5, FRAZIER 2 – Juliet White had three hits, including a double, Katie White had two hits and Tessa Livingood hit a two-run single in the Lady Raiders’ non-section victory in a clash of playoff teams.

Winning pitcher Sincere Dunlap allowed one earned run on five hits with four walks and nine strikeouts.

Alivia Noah and Kendal Nehls each contributed a double for Uniontown (10-7).

Morgan Fisher had two hits and Zoey Zurenski smacked a triple and drove in a run for Frazier (11-9).

Zurenski also tossed five scoreless innings in relief for the Lady Commodores, allowing four hits and no walks with six strikeouts.

WASHINGTON 11, JEFFERSON-MORGAN 1 – Kiernan Wormsley hit a three-run homer, Kali Hagan ripped a two-run shot and Chessa Henderson and Z Kyiah Hines blasted solo homers as the Lady Prexies (10-7) triumphed over the host Lady Rockets in a six-inning non-section game.

Jefferson-Morgan (14-6) was limited to three singles with one each by Emilee Bazzoli, Robi Finley and Addyson Teagarden. Kallyn Novak drove in the lone run for J-M.

WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 1, MCGUFFEY 0 – Gina Tedrow fired a two-hit shutout and Ellie Makel gave her the only run she would need with a solo homer in the first inning as the Lady Raiders edged the visiting Lady Highlanders in a non-section pitching duel.

Hard-luck losing pitcher Miley Main surrendered just the one home run on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts for McGuffey (9-6).

Tedrow struck out 11 and walked none. Makel had two hits and Eva Pester doubled for Waynesburg (6-9).

BASEBALL

MOUNT PLEASANT 6, CONNELLSVILLE 4 – Ian Shipley dilevered a tiebreaking RBI double in a two-run seventh inning to propel the visiting Vikings past the Falcons in a non-section battle between playoff teams.

Dane Firmstone singled leading off the seventh and took second on Santino Marne’s sacrifice bunt before coming home on Shipley’s clutch hit. Colten Keefer singled in Shipley to tack on an insurance run.

Shipley had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs, Quinn Painter had two hits and an RBI and Marne also had two hits for Mount Pleasant (12-8), which also got a single and two RBIs from Jordan Grieff.

Winning pitcher Carter Urban allowed two earned runs on six hits in going the distance.

Keegan Lott had a double, single and two RBIs fro Connellsville (9-11), which also got a double from Linkon Keller and an RBI from Chris Johnson.

YOUGH 3, BROWNSVILLE 1 – Nate Bell and Jayden Huber each had a single and an RBI and three pitchers combined on a two-hitter as the host Cougars topped the Falcons in a non-section game.

Starting and winning pitcher Mike Bobnar gave up one hit in four scoreless innings, Jason Onder allowed one hit in two scoreless frames and Jackson Wetzler earned the save despite surrendering one run in the seventh for Yough (11-8).

Jeremiah McDonald pitched a complete game and coughed up two earned runs while suffering the tough-luck loss for Brownsville (4-14).

Jeremiah McDonald and Hunter McDonald had the only hits and Benjamin Vojacek knocked in the lone run for the Falcons.

THOMAS JEFFERSON 3, BELLE VERNON 2 – Jack Edwards, Anthony Corella and AJ Watson had the only three hits for the visiting Leopards in a non-section loss to the host Jaguars (16-4) in a clash of playoff teams.

Freddy Cirlos had the only RBI for Belle Vernon (14-5) with its other run scoring on a balk.
