Undefeated Lady Gators cruise to non-section win
Mallory Clemmer and Emma Larkin combined for 41 points in Geibel Catholic’s 58-28 victory over Derry on Monday in non-section girls basketball play at Geibel Catholic Junior/Senior High School.
Clemmer, a freshman, scored a game-high 21 points and Larkin dropped 20, as the Lady Gators improved to 5-0.
Janiah Darnell pulled down 17 rebounds for Geibel.
Ava Henderson added 10 points for the home team. Geibel had a 24-9 lead after the first quarter and a 34-17 halftime advantage. The Lady Gators outscored the Lady Trojans, 10-4, in the third quarter and 14-7 in the fourth.
Jane Huss led Derry (2-2) in scoring with 13 points. Teammate Lucie Loucks had 11.
Brownsville 50, Jefferson-Morgan 20 — The Lady Rockets hung tough in the first quarter, but the Lady Falcons used a 16-point advantage in the second period for a non-section victory at Brownsville.
The Lady Falcons’ Skyler Gates had a game-high 22 points. Teammate Ava Clark added 18, as Brownsville improved to 2-1.
Jefferson-Morgan’s Leighana Gooden had 15 points on five 3-pointers.
Beth-Center 42, Uniontown 33 — The Lady Red Raiders cut the deficit to four points heading into the fourth quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs had an 13-8 edge in the final frame for the non-section triumph.
Callie Dorsey scored 16 points Beth-Center, as the Lady Bulldogs improved to 3-2.
Uniontown (0-1, 1-3) was led in scoring by Emily Myers, who put in 12 points.
Waynesburg Central 48, Carmichaels 19 — The Lady Raiders jumped out early and never looked back in a non-section victory at Waynesburg.
The Lady Raiders improved to 2-1 this season, as Avery Davis had a game-high 14 points. Peyton Cowell had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Ke’Lani Chun and Shalyn Pyle scored four points apiece for the Lady Mikes (0-4).
Boys basketball
Steel Valley 62, Waynesburg Central 60 — The Raiders rallied in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime, but the Ironmen pulled out a non-section victory at Waynesburg.
Waynesburg Central (0-3) outscored Steel Valley, 15-6, in the fourth period to tie the game at 54-54 at the end of regulation.
The Ironmen (1-6) had an 8-6 edge in overtime. Steel Valley’s Nate Yuhas had a game-high 25 points. Teammates Rashun Hough (15) and Jaeshawn Carson (12) were also in double figures.
The Raiders’ Cole Headlee had 23 points and five assists. Alex VanSickle put in 16 and Dane Woods added 12.
Waynesburg’s Alex Eck pulled down 15 rebounds.
Charleroi 48, Beth-Center 46 — The Cougars edged the Bulldogs in non-section play after holding a one-point advantage in the third and fourth quarters following a tie game at halftime.
Beth-Center (2-2) was led in scoring by Tyler Kurowski, who had 12 points. Teammate Jason Zellie put in 10.
Charleroi improved to 2-2.
Yough 62, Mt. Pleasant 45 — The Cougars turned a five-point first-quarter cushion into a 20-point advantage heading into the fourth period in a non-section victory at Mt. Pleasant.
Yough’s Jackson Pore led the game in scoring with 18 points. The Cougars’ Ryan Westerman (15), Charlie Quinn (13) and Brody King (11) were all in double figures.
The Vikings’ Aiden Johnson had 15 points.
Hockey
Deer Lakes 3, Connellsville 0 — The Lancers scored three goals in first 8½ minutes of the second period for a PIHL D2 home victory over the Falcons.
Connellsville (4-4-1-2) has now lost five games in a row, including one in overtime and another in a shootout.
Mason Cervone scored the only goal Deer Lakes (7-4-1-0) needed 59 seconds into the second period. RJ Norkus doubled the home team’s lead with a goal at 7:33, and Ryan Grunden netted the third goal at 8:28.
Connellsville was held scoreless on two power play opportunities, while the Lancers failed on their only man-advantage opportunity.
The Falcons’ Nick Daniels-Nimmick stopped 11 shots. Nikita Oleksiienko preserved the shutout with 20 saves.
