Lady Mustangs earn section victory over Southmoreland
Laurel Highlands had three players in double figures as it rolled to a 52-13 victory over Southmoreland in Section 3-4A girls basketball play on Thursday at Harold “Horse” Taylor Memorial Gymnasium.
The Lady Mustangs (1-2, 2-5) were led in scoring by Taylor Schwertfeger, who had 14 points. Teammate Isabella Paschke had 11 and Madison Brooks put in 10.
Ashley Seder led the Lady Scotties (0-3, 1-8) in scoring with eight points.
Laurel Highlands had a 15-3 lead after the first quarter and a 28-5 halftime advantage. The Lady Mustangs outscored the visitors, 19-6, in the third quarter and 5-2 in the fourth.
Bethel Park 46, Uniontown 33 — The Lady Red Raiders opened the second half on a 6-0 run to take a 23-22 lead, but the Lady Black Hawks weathered the storm for a Section 4-5A triumph at A.J. Everhart Memorial Gymnasium.
Uniontown senior and recent 1,000-point scorer Aierra Jenkins had a team-high 15 points on five field goals and five free throws, but Bethel Park sharpshooter Kathryn Boff made four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 16 points. Teammate Adalynn Owen had two 3-pointers and Isabella Coleman also made a shot from behind-the-arc as the visitors made seven 3-pointers.
The Lady Red Raiders’ Lyric McLee put in 11 points, on three field goals, including two 3-pointers, and was 3 of 5 at the foul line. Teammate Charley Murtha connected on two field goals and was 1 of 2 at the line for five points.
The Lady Black Hawks (2-1, 4-2) had a 14-7 lead after the first quarter and a 22-17 halftime advantage, as Uniontown (1-1, 5-2) closed the second period on a 6-0 run.
Bethel Park had a 10-8 edge in the third quarter and a 14-8 advantage in the fourth frame.
The Lady Red Raiders return to action on Dec. 27 in the Carmichaels King Coal Lions Tournament against the host school. The tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
West Greene 53, Clairton 17 — The Lady Pioneers took control in the second quarter and cruised to a Section 2-1A victory over the Lady Bears at Clairton High School.
West Greene (2-1, 6-2) outscored the home team, 19-1, in the third quarter, and 12-3 in the fourth. The Lady Pioneers had a 13-4 edge in the second period.
Clairton (0-3, 1-4) played West Greene tough in the first quarter, as both teams scored nine points.
The Lady Pioneers’ Kendra Tharp had a game-high 14 points. Teammates Jillissa Yeater and Katie Brudnock put in nine points apiece.
Karma Fuqua led the Lady Bears in scoring with 12 points.
