Bentworth wrestlers open section with home win
The Bentworth wrestling team opened Section 1-AA action Wednesday night with a 46-21 victory against visiting Jefferson-Morgan.
The Bearcats won the first four bouts with Brayden Tagger (189) and Alex Rusilko (285) securing decisions, and Vitali Daniels (215) and Baylee Oreski (107) winning by fall.
The Rockets’ Carson Sweeney stopped the early run at 114 pounds with a fall in 2:59.
The Bearcats’ Drake McClure (121), Ben Luketich (127), and Chris Vargo (133) followed with pins. Bentworth’s Bryce Crowson won by a major decision at 139 pounds.
Jefferson-Morgan’s Johnny Gilbert won by fall at 145 pounds.
Bentworth’s Owen Ivcic won by fall at 152 pounds, and the Rockets won the final two bouts with Chase Frameli winning by fall at 160 pounds and Grant Hathaway taking a decision at 172 pounds.
McGuffey 36, Beth-Center 24 – The Bulldogs lost at home to the Highlanders in the Section 1-AA opener for both teams.
Beth-Center’s Jacob Layhue (189) won by fall. Teammates Malachi Peak (215),. Pablo Bautista (139), Frederick Sherman (160), and Alex Medlen (121) all won by decision. Jetadiah Ehnart received a forfeit at 285 pounds.
Mount Pleasant 43, Albert Gallatin 27 – The Vikings were tough at home for a Section 2-AA victory over the visiting Colonials.
Mount Pleasant’s Nick Stabile (107), Tristan Wtorkiewicz (133), Joseph Longhi (139), Greg Shaulis (145), Jamison Poklembo (152), and Dylan Pitzer (285) all won by fall. Ty Hornack had a decision at 189 pounds.
Albert Gallatin’s Alex Kingsley (114) won by fall. Ryan Hawthorne received a forfeit at 121 pounds, as did William Johnson at 127 pounds.Stephen Predajna won a major decision at 160 pounds, as did teammate James Standish at 215 pounds.
The Colonials’ Landon Conroy had a technical fall at 172 pounds.
Southmoreland 48, Belle Vernon 27 – Micah McGeary (121), Kash Bish (139) and Shawn Hollis (160) won by fall and Southmoreland (1-0) accepted five forfeits to win a Section 2-2A match.
Colby Hibner (133), Giovanni Weightman (145) and Elijah Brown (172) won by fall and Dominik Skibicki (152) and Austin Hoffman (189) also picked up victories for Belle Vernon (0-1).
Girls basketball
Mount Pleasant 40, Derry 23 – The Lady Vikings led 22-12 at halftime and didn’t look back for a non-section win over the visiting Lady Trojans.
Riley Gesinski scored a game-high 11 points for Mount Pleasant (2-1).
Samantha Gruska and Jane Huss both finished with nine points for Derry (1-2).
Bentworth 42, Jefferson-Morgan 26 – The Lady Bearcats won their first game of the season with a non-section victory at Jefferson-Morgan.
Bentworth (1-2) led 11-4, 25-9 and 35-19 at the quarter breaks.
Kayla O’Dell paced the Lady Bearcats with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Amber Sallee added 13 points with three 3-pointers. Taylor Aubrey grabbed nine rebounds.
Ava Wood led Jefferson-Morgan (1-2) with eight points.
California 57, West Greene 35 – The Lady Trojans pulled away with 18 points in the second quarter for a non-section road victory.
California led 17-13 after the first quarter and 35-18 at halftime.
Rakiyah Porter led the way for California with 18 points. Hayley Gibson finished with 14 points.
Brooke Miller scored 10 points for West Greene.
Boys basketball
McGuffey 60, Carmichaels 17 – The Highlanders held the Mikes to single digits in each quarter for a non-section home victory.
Grayson Wallace led McGuffey with 20 points. Aydan Cunningham finished with 14 points.
Dom Colarusso scored six points and Ambrose Adamson added four for Carmichaels.
