Local roundup: Fillies, Waynesburg both improve to 5-0
Ayrianna Sumpter scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Laurel Highlands remained unbeaten by defeating visiting Connellsville, 31-18, in non-section girls basketball action on Monday night.
The Lady Falcons were ahead 3-2 after the first quarter in the defensive struggle before the Fillies (5-0) eked out a 13-12 halftime advantage.
Laurel Highlands pushed its advantage up to 22-16 after three quarters then outscored Connellsville 9-2 in the fourth to pull away for the victory.
Sierra Jenkins also had eight rebounds for the Fillies and Taylor Schwertfeger chipped in with seven points and four boards.
The Lady Falcons fall to 2-3.
Waynesburg Central 49, Beth-Center 17 – Kaley Rohanna scored a game-high 16 points as the Lady Raiders remained perfect on the season with a non-section victory over the visiting Lady Bulldogs.
Waynesburg (5-0) led 8-3 after the first quarter and shut B-C out in the second in taking an 18-3 halftime lead and pulled away from there.
Josie Horne had 10 points for the Lady Raiders.
Emma Shashura and Lauren Brown each scored seven points for Beth-Center (2-3).
Brownsville 61, California 40 – Zhariah Reed scored a career-high 23 points and Skyler Gates followed close behind with 21 to lift the Lady Falcons past the visiting Lady Trojans in a non-section clash.
Brownsville (5-1) led 11-7, 25-13 and 42-24 at the breaks.
Ava Clark chipped in with 14 points for coach Patty Columbia’s Lady Falcons.
Rakiyah Porter racked up a team-high 21 points for California (1-3).
Leechburg 37, Geibel Catholic 36 – Adalynn Zanatto scored 19 points and the Lady Blue Devils out-scored the visiting Lady Gators 8-7 in overtime to pull out a one-win in a non-section clash.
Emma Larkin rang up a game-high 23 points for the Lady Gators.
Geibel (3-2) led 14-8 after one quarter, 16-13 at halftime and 20-18 after three but Leechburg (3-1) pulled even with an 11-9 edge in the fourth quarter to force OT.
Olivia Vigna had 10 points for the Lady Blue Devils.
Belle Vernon 44, Charleroi 43 – The Lady Leopards hung on for a one-point, non-section win over the host Lady Cougars.
Saylor Lee had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and Caroline Lee grabbed 17 boards for Belle Vernon (3-1), which also got 10 points from Kenzie Seliga.
Belle Vernon led 16-10 after one quarter, Charleroi took a 22-21 halftime advantage and the Lady Leopards moved in front 33-32 after three quarters. Both teams scored 11 points in the final frame.
Bella Carroto led all scorers with 20 points for the Lady Cougars (3-1), and Ella Sypolt had 10.
Carmichaels 35, Mapletown 24 – Megan Voithofer poured in 21 points to spark the Lady Mikes to a non-section victory at Mapletown.
In a back-and-forth battle, the Lady Maples (1-3) led 4-3 after the first quarter, Carmichaels went ahead 17-6 and halftime but Mapletown used a 10-0 advantage in the third quarter to get within 17-16. The Lady Mikes (1-3) used an 18-8 edge in the final frame to win going away.
McGuffey 54, West Greene 27 – Taylor Schumacher had 24 points as the Class AAA Lady Highlanders outscored the Class A Lady Pioneers 38-10 in the middle two quarters to earn a non-section victory.
Madi Gaso added 11 points for McGuffey (4-0).
Kendra Tharp paced West Greene (1-4) with nine points.
Yough 54, Steel Valley 23 – Autumn Matthews tossed in 20 points as the Lady Cougars pounced on the host Ironmen for a non-section victory.
Brooke Kowalski added 12 points and Carly Fitzgibbons contributed 11 for Yough (4-1).
The Lady Cougars took a 13-4 lead in the first quarter then outscored Steel Valley (0-5) 23-9 in the second for a 36-13 halftime advantage and cruised from there.
Ava Caiarelli led the Ironmen with seven points.
South Side Area 57, Bentworth 18 – Bailey Strinisa scored 23 points and Ally Boyd had 13 as South Side (3-2) beat the visiting Lady Bearcats in a non-section game.
Amber Sallee hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points for Bentworth (1-4).
Winchester Thurston 74, Frazier 22 – Aleah Cooper and DaShae Cocran scored 21 and 20 points, respectively, as Winchester Thursday (2-2) rolled past the visiting Lady Commodores in a non-section game.
Chloe Harger topped Frazier (2-3) in scoring with 10 points.
Elizabeth Forward 54, Beaver Area 35 – The Lady Warriors (3-2) cruised past the Lady Bobcats (2-3) in a non-section meeting.
Mount Pleasant 25, South Allegheny 23 – The Lady Vikings improved to 4-1 with a non-section victory in a defensive battle with the visiting Lady Gladiators (2-3).

Brownsville 65, California 50 – Trenton Wible ripped the nets for 26 points as the Falcons knocked off the host Trojans in a non-section game.
Brownsville (2-3) led 17-12 after the first quarter and boosted their advantage to 32-22 at halftime. California cut the gap to 47-40 after three quarters but the Falcons put the game away with an 18-10 edge in the final frame.
Rylan Johnson followed Wible with 10 points.
Jaquese Derns paced the Trojans (0-3) with 15 points. Vinny Manzella and Jacob Ziolecki each contributed 13 points.
Albert Gallatin 74, Brentwood 57 – Blake White tallied a game-high 22 points and the Colonials outscored the host Spartans 45-27 in the second half in a non-section victory.
Shymere Wilson made four 3-pointers to account for all of his 12 points for AG (3-2) which led 15-11 after the first quarter but trailed 30-29 at halftime.
Forrest Betz also made four 3-pointers in leading Brentwood (2-3) with 20 points and Zach Wuenschel had 11 points. Colton Rosing scored nine points on a trio of 3-pointers.
Waynesburg Central 81, Beth-Center 77 – Dane Woods and Alex Vansickle scored 23 points apiece and the Raiders put four players in double digits on their way to a non-section win at Beth-Center.
The loss wasted a game-high 31-point performance by B-C’s Brody Tharp, who sank seven 3-pointers. Jason Zellie followed with 21 points and Jonah Sussan added 12.
The Bulldogs (1-3) led 26-20 after the first quarter but Waynesburg fought back in the second quarter to take a 48-40 halftime lead. B-C held a 37-33 advantage in the second half but it wasn’t enough.
Alex Eck and Cole Headlee contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Raiders (2-3). The visitors were strong on the boards as Eck collected 19 rebounds and Woods hauled down 16 boards. Headlee dished out seven assists.
Jefferson-Morgan 46, Charleroi 43 – The Rockets rallied for a non-section win by outsourcing the Cougars 12-4 in the fourth quarter as John Woodward had 18 points.
Houston Guesman chipped in with 14 points for J-M (4-1).
Bryce Large had a game-high 19 points for Charleroi (0-4).
Propel Montour 55, Calvary Chapel Christian 24 – The Legends (1-4) topped the visiting Lions (0-1) in a non-section game.
