Local roundup: Frazier tops Bentworth for 4th straight win

Frazier began the season 0-3 but has reeled off four consecutive wins since then after defeating host Bentworth, 64-46, in the Section 4-AA boys basketball opener for both teams on Friday night.

Dailan McManus made three 3-pointers in scoring a game-high 19 points to lead coach Zach Keefer鈥檚 Commodores (1-0, 4-3). Brock Alekson totaled 12 points and 14 rebounds and Darian Bateman contributed 12 points and 12 boards for Frazier, which also got 18 points from Brennen Stewart in a balanced attack.

The Commodores jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter and led 36-21 at halftime. Coach Bob Kennedy鈥檚 Bearcats (0-1, 1-4) made a game of it by outscoring the visitors 20-11 in the third quarter to get within 47-41 but Frazier pulled away with a 17-5 advantage in the final frame.

Bentworth鈥檚 Chris Harper made a trio of 3-pointers in scoring 19 points to tie for game-high honors and Ben Hays added 17 points.

Yough 59, Brownsville 37 鈥 Terek Crosby poured in a game-high 35 points as the Cougars gradually pulled away from the host Falcons in the Section 4-AAA opener for both teams.

Austin Matthews contributed 12 points and 13 rebounds for Yough (1-0, 5-2), which led 11-7, 22-13 and 39-25 at the quarter breaks.

Zander Aird chipped in with nine points for the Cougars.

Trent Wible paced Brownsville (0-1, 3-4) with 15 points and Harlan Davis added seven.

Carmichaels 72, Geibel Catholic 42 鈥 Dominic Colarusso and Robbie Wilson-Jones each scored 16 points as the Mikes defeated the visiting Gators in a non-section game.

Aydan Adamson and Colin Andrews also reached double figures for Carmichaels (3-3) with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

The Mikes were up 17-12 after the first quarter and outscored Geibel (0-6) 39-16 in the middle two frames to take control.

Freshman Gary Tarbuk scored 14 points and Tommy Kolencik followed with 10 for the Gators, who recently found out starter Seth Dolan would miss the rest of the season due to an injury suffered in a loss to Brownsville on Tuesday.

Avella 73, Mapletown 39 鈥 Westley Burchianti scored 17 of his game-high 29 points in the first quarter when the Eagles flew out to a 32-9 lead on their way to a non-section win over the visiting Maples.

Bryce Wright made four 3-pointers in scoring 18 points for Avella (4-2) which used an effective press to help it take control.

鈥淲e didn鈥檛 take care of the basketball,鈥 first-year Mapletown coach Chris Everson said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 just making the right decisions when the ball is being pressured, that鈥檚 what it comes down to and that鈥檚 what got us tonight.鈥

Jeremiah Mick led the Maples (0-4) with 15 points and twin brother Josh Mick followed eight points. Lucas Stevenson added six points with a 3-pointer.

Everson was hired not long before the season began.

鈥淚 did step in late. I鈥檝e only had a month,鈥 Everson said. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 love the losses but the kids are great. We鈥檙e both adjusting. I鈥檓 trying to put my system in and that鈥檚 hard to do in a short period of time but they鈥檙e working at it.鈥

A couple seniors have taken the reins, according to Everson, who is assisted by Nick Atkins.

鈥淎.J. Vanata is for sure one of our leaders,鈥 Everson said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 our point guard, gets us in stuff. And Braden McIntire also, he鈥檚 our starting two guard but he was out with an injury tonight at that hurt us.鈥

Elizabeth Forward 62, Trinity 58 鈥 Isaiah Turner scored a game-high 20 points as the Warriors fought off the host Hillers in a non-section battle.

EF led 16-12 after the first quarter, Trinity fought back to take a 28-26 halftime advantage, but the Warriors retook the lead 46-43 after three quarters.

Cy Hercheiroath added 16 points for Elizabeth Forward (4-1).

Dante DeRubbo paced the Hillers (2-3) with 16 points and was followed by Johan Williamson (14) and Jacob Dunkle (10).

Canon-McMillan 62, Ringgold 45 鈥 Eamon O鈥橠onoghue tallied 20 points as the Big Macs knocked off the visiting Rams in a non-section game.

Roman Koenemund followed with 15 points for Canon-McMillan (3-2).

Daryle Tolliver paced Ringgold (1-4) with 15 points.

Girls basketball

Mount Pleasant 38, Southmoreland 14 鈥 Riley Gesinski tallied a game-high 16 points and the Lady Vikings took charge by outscoring the visiting Lady Scotties 13-0 in the second quarter on the way to a non-section win.

Mount Pleasant (5-1) led 8-5 after the first quarter, 21-5 at halftime and 32-9 after three quarters.

Bea Pawlikowsky scored four points for Southmoreland (0-5).

Jefferson-Morgan 49, Carlynton 26 鈥 Kayla Larkin tossed in a game-high 18 points as the Lady Rockets flew past the host Lady Cougars in a non-section game.

Jefferson-Morgan led 15-8, 26-14 and 42-18 at the breaks.

Ava Wood scored 17 points for J-M (2-4) and Ali Ostrich added 10 points.

Lucy Vetter and Carlee Hughes were the top scorers for Carlynton (3-3) with 11 and 10 points.

Monessen 61, Sto-Rox 24 鈥 Na鈥橨aziah Carter rang up 17 points and Sidney Campbell followed close behind with 16 as the Lady Greyhounds blasted the host Lady Vikings in non-section action.

Monessen (2-1) rolled to a 17-2 advantage in the first quarter and cruised from there.

Arianna Johnston scored eight points for Sto-Rox (2-4).
