Local roundup: Gates scores 31 as Brownsville tops Washington
Skyler Gates poured in a game-high 31 points as Brownsville gradually pulled away from visiting Washington for a 63-37 victory in Section 3-AAA girls basketball action Monday night.
The Lady Falcons (1-1, 4-2) led 8-2, 20-11 and 42-21 at the quarter breaks.
Zhariah Reed rang up 21 points to follow Gates in the Brownsville scoring column.
Olivia Wood scored 12 points for the Lady Prexies (1-1, 2-4) who also got 10 points from Kyndra Wynn.
Uniontown 61, Turkeyfoot Valley 44 – Disaya Craggette led a trio of Lady Raiders in double figures with 13 points in a non-section win over the visiting Lady Rams.
Lyric McLee added 11 points for Uniontown (3-3) and Tessa Nicholson added 10 points.
The Lady Raiders led 14-8 after the first quarter then surged to a commanding 35-14 halftime advantage and stayed in control the rest of the way.
Maleigh Younken and Shyanne Schur scored 13 and 10 points for Turkeyfoot.
Clairton 67, Geibel Catholic 51 – Clairton’s Iyanna Wade drained six 3-pointers in ringing up 52 points and Geibel Catholic’s Emma Larkin tossed in 38 in a matchup of two of the most prolific scorers in the WPIAL with the host Lady Bears earning the Section 2-A win.
Clairton (2-0, 4-1) led 15-13 after the first quarter then extended its advantage to 35-26 by halftime and 49-34 after three.
The Lady Gators fall to 1-1 in the section and 7-1 overall.
West Greene 41, Mapletown 23 – Madelyn Roberts scored nine points and the host Lady Pioneers gradually pulled away from the Lady Maples for a Section 2-A victory.
West Greene led 9-5, 22-9 and 32-13 at the quarter breaks.
Marissa Tharp added eight points for the Lady Pioneers (1-1, 5-1) who had nine different players hit the scoring column.
Makenna Lotspeich scored a game-high 11 points for Mapletown (0-2, 2-5).
Bethel Park 68, Albert Gallatin 37 – Ella Sabatos had 18 points and Sadie Orie followed with 16 as visiting Bethel Park (2-0, 4-2) triumphed over the Lady Colonials in a Section 4-AAAAA game.
Albert Gallatin (0-2, 2-3) held a 13-11 lead after the first quarter before the visitors went ahead to stay with a 22-6 edge in the second for a 33-19 halftime advantage.
Mya Glisan paced the Lady Colonials with 15 points and Grayce Panos chipped in with 10.
Belle Vernon 46, Yough 32 – Aubrey Brown totaled 19 points and 13 rebounds to spark the Lady Leopards in a Section 3-AAAA win over the visiting Lady Cougars.
Abby Russell added 10 points and three assists for Belle Vernon (2-0, 4-3) which also got seven rebounds and three steals from Saylor Lee.
Daisy Miller hit three 3-pointers in scoring 11 points for Yough (4-3, 1-1).
Burgettstown 63, Frazier 44 – Savanna Rush’s 24 points paced the Lady Blue Devils in a non-section win over the visiting Lady Commodores.
Andi Midler (13), Paige Klodowski (12) and Skylar Pennington (12) also reached double figures for Burgettstown (2-4).
Allie Yauch tied for game-high honors with 24 points, including four 3-pointers, for Frazier (3-5).
Southmoreland 62, Ringgold 58 – The Lady Scotties got 21 points from Lanie Moore and 20 from Olivia Aumer on their way to a Section 3-AAAA win over the visiting Lady Rams.
Southmoreland (1-1, 3-5) took a 31-21 halftime lead and held on from there.
Alayna Macioce scored a game-high 24 points for Ringgold (0-2, 3-3) and Natalie Walsh added 12.
Fort Cherry 63, Carmichaels 9 – Brooke Cornali tossed in 16 points and Jazlyn Martino added 15 for the Lady Rangers (3-2) in a non-section victory over the visiting Lady Mikes (0-6).
Ali Jacobs had two points for Carmichaels (0-6).
South Park 55, Mount Pleasant 29 – Andrea Kuczma scored 21 points and the Lady Eagles took control with a 24-5 advantage in the second quarter on their way to a Section 3-AAAA win over the host Lady Vikings.
South Park led 10-7 after the first quarter and 20-18 at halftime before pushing the margin out to 44-23 after three.
Bella Stromberg had 13 points for the Lady Eagles (2-0, 3-1).
Carmella Spallone led Mount Pleasant (0-2, 0-6) with six points.
Boys basketball
Charleroi 70, California 49 – Brock Henderson led a foursome of Cougars in double figures with 18 points in a non-section win over the visiting Trojans.
Also hitting double digits for Charleroi (4-3) were Shea Smith (15), Amaur Staub (11) and Jackson Keranko (10). Staub also collected nine rebounds.
Jacob Ziolecki led California (1-4) with 14 points and seven rebounds and Caden Monticelli had 12 points and also grabbed seven boards.
Geibel Catholic 68, Cheswick Christian 53 – Roman Riccelli scored 23 points and the host Gators rode a strong first quarter to a non-section win over Cheswick Christian.
Geibel shot out to a 22-6 lead in the opening frame and the scoring was fairly even the rest of the way.
Evan Strimel had 17 points for the Gators (4-2) who also got 15 points from Gary Tarbuk.
Brady Rochkind (24) and Keith Booth (23) combined for all but six of Cheswick Christian’s (2-3) points.
