Lady Greyhounds win to secure third straight PIAA appearance

Monessen held off visiting Bishop Canevin, 44-41, in the WPIAL Class A Fifth-Place Consolation game to earn the final district spot in the PIAA tournament in girls basketball action on Wednesday night.

It’s the third consecutive year the Lady Greyhounds, coached by Janine Vertacnik, have qualified for the state playoffs.

MyAsia Majors led the way for Monessen (19-6) with a game-high 14 points. Madison Johnson also reached double figures with 10 points.

The Lady Greyhounds built a 12-9 advantage in the first quarter and held leads of 20-17 at halftime and 33-26 after three quarters.

The Lady Crusaders (8-14) used a 15-11 edge in the fourth quarter to get close but it wasn’t enough.

Amari Elliott and Isabella Sysak paced Bishop Canevin with 11 and 10 points.
