Local roundup: Pioneers rally for stunning win at Monessen
West Greene outscored Monessen 18-9 in the fourth quarter to pull out a stunning Section 2-A road victory in boys basketball action on Wednesday night.
Lane Allison scored a game-high 21 points for Pioneers (4-1, 9-5) who pulled into a first-place tie with the Greyhounds (4-1, 12-2).
Monessen, which saw its 11-game winning streak come to an end, led 23-20 at halftime and 34-28 after three quarters.
Timothy Kershaw and Lorenzo Gardner led the Greyhounds with 17 and 15 points, respectively.
Parker Burns tallied 11 points for the Pioneers who have won six of their last seven.
Elizabeth Forward 74, Albert Gallatin 69 – Isaiah Turner scored 21 points and Krystian Kennedy hit five 3-pointers in tallying 19 points as the Warriors held on for a Section 3-AAAA win at Albert Gallatin.
Elizabeth Forward (1-3, 9-6) took a 19-6 lead in the opening quarter but the Colonials (2-3, 6-7) fought back to within 31-25 at halftime. The Warriors pushed their advantage up to 51-43 after three quarters and held on for the victory.
Charlile Meehleib added 14 points for EF.
Blake White tossed in a game-high 23 points with three 3-pointers for Albert Gallatin which also got 17 points from Shymere Wilson and 12 from Mykel Belt.
Waynesburg Central 58, McGuffey 46 – Cole Headlee totaled 17 points, seven assists and five rebounds to help the Raiders upend the visiting Highlanders in a Section 4-AAA game.
McGuffey held a 29-27 halftime advantage but Waynesburg surged to a 43-38 lead after three quarters and outscored the Highlanders 15-8 in the final frame to put the game away.
Alex Vansickle followed Headless with 15 points for the Raiders (2-6, 5-11) who also got 11 points and eight rebounds from Dane Woods.
Grayson Wallace led all scorers with 19 points for McGuffey (3-5, 12-6) and Aydan Cunningham chipped in with 13 points.
Charleroi 50, Frazier 38 – The Cougars pushed out to a 28-15 halftime lead and held from there for a non-section win over the visiting Commodores.
Jake Beverage and Brock Henderson paced Charleroi (7-11) with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Dailan McManus racked up a game-high 23 points for Frazier (9-8).
Girls basketball
Elizabeth Forward 67, Uniontown 18 – The host Lady Warriors rolled to a 20-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in defeating the Lady Raiders in a Section 3-AAAA game for the second time in three days
Alyssa Terza topped EF (8-0, 15-2) in scoring with 14 points and Michelle Jellison followed close behind with 13.
Gellece Ingram tallied nine points for Uniontown (2-6, 5-11) which lost at home to Elizabeth Forward by an almost identical score, 68-18, on Monday.
