GCC stuns Frazier with 3-0 sweep in WPIAL volleyball final
McMURRAY 鈥 Perhaps Frazier coach Mandy Hartman put it best following her team鈥檚 3-0 loss to Greensburg Central Catholic in the WPIAL Class A girls volleyball championship match Saturday afternoon.
鈥淚t鈥檚 your worst nightmare,鈥 Hartman said after watching third-seeded GCC completely dominate her top-seeded Lady Commodores by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-15 at Peters Township High School鈥檚 AHN Arena.
Ashlyn Black hammered home 24 kills to help the Lady Centurions (17-3) earn their fourth district crown in nine finals. Frazier was playing in its third WPIAL final and is now 2-2.
鈥淏lack just completely took over,鈥 Hartman said. 鈥淪he just absolutely dominated. We didn鈥檛 have an answer for her. We couldn鈥檛 stop her at the net. I don鈥檛 think we had a block all night.
鈥淚t kind of reminded me when we won it in 2022 and Jensyn (Hartman) just kind of took over.鈥
The Lady Commodores didn鈥檛 follow through with their game plan, according to Hartman, whose team won two regular-season meetings against GCC, 3-2 in a reverse sweep victory on the road and 3-1 at home.
鈥淵ou know as a coach when you go over so many things prior to a big match like this and 鈥 I don鈥檛 think we executed or even tried to do a thing that we鈥檝e been practicing,鈥 Hartman said. 鈥淲e couldn鈥檛 even think things through. That鈥檚 not how you want to show up for a game like this.
鈥淲e were a deer caught in headlights today.鈥
Both teams will open PIAA play on Tuesday.
The Lady Commodores held a 14-12 lead in the first set but GCC went on a 13-5 run to claim a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Commodores never led in the second set and trailed by as much as six before falling by four.
Frazier held an early 5-4 lead in the third set before GCC gradually took control. The Lady Centurions were up 18-15 and then closed out the match by reeling off the final seven points.
鈥淒efinitely one of our best ones,鈥 Black said of the match. 鈥淲e鈥檝e improved a lot over the season. Everybody just played their best game and we were able to pull it off.鈥
Maura Oslosky had 34 assists for GCC and Bri Evans had 17 digs.
Maddie Salisbury led Frazier with nine kills and Addison Schultz had six. Addison Hiles recorded 25 digs and Grace Vaughn had 16. Gracen Hartman had 21 assists.
Frazier had only two blocks.
Mandy Hartman felt her team鈥檚 youth may have had an effect on Frazier鈥檚 performance.
鈥淭his might鈥檝e been a little too much,鈥 Hartman said of the big stage. 鈥淲e have some young players out there on the floor.鈥
Frazier has a quick turnaround with a trip to Saegertown in the state playoffs up next on Tuesday.
鈥淣othing can be as bad as this,鈥 Hartman said. 鈥淥nly up from here.鈥
