Leopards open season with section victory
Jordan Mocello finished at 1-under par to help lead Belle Vernon to a 194-246 victory over Ringgold on Monday in Class 3A Section 2 golf play on the gold course at Cedarbrook Golf Course.
Mocello shot 35 and teammate Jack Edwards was at even-par with a 36. Evan Mesco finished at 40, followed by Landon Vaccaro (41) and Connor Bergman (42).
Ringgold’s Evan Callaway had the low round for his team with a 45. Trevor Benson carded a 49. Evan Anderson and Cole Komonich each shot a 50, and Brady Lippert finished with a 52.
The match was the section and overall opener for both teams.
Waynesburg Central 195, Bentworth 242 — The Raiders had three players shot under 40 in a Class 2A Section 3 victory at Chippewa Golf Course.
Waynesburg’s Lucas Slifko earned medalist honors with a 2-over-par 37, while Austin Surber and Jarett Tretnik each carded a 38. Rykan Gustafson shot a 40 and Cole Headlee finished his nine holes at 42.
The Bearcats’ Trent Wolpink fired a round of 44. Craig McDonald shot a 45 and Wyatt Snyder a 49. Sam Wade (50) and David Miller (54) closed the scoring for the home team.
Both squads were playing their first match of the season.
Jerry Roman Memorial Chairman’s Cup — Mount Pleasant finished second in the tournament at Cedarbrook Golf Course with a gross total of 443.
The Vikings’ Austyn Gross fired a low round of 72 for his team on the par-72 course.
Teammate Hunter Snyder fired an 86 and Nico Pisula a 91. Matthew Labuda (92) and Trever Gonofsky (95) closed out the scoring for Mount Pleasant.
