Lady Gators win season-opening match
Geibel Catholic opened its girls volleyball season with a 3-2 triumph at Calvary Chapel Christian on Friday in non-section play.
The Lady Gators won the first set, 25-15, but lost the next two by scores of 25-22 and 25-20 before forcing a fifth set after a 25-17 victory. The visitors dominated the fifth set, winning, 15-2, to clinch the match.
Nolace Petrosky led Geibel in kills with 14. Teammate Sarah Shumar had 25 assists and Angela Li led the Lady Gators in digs with 26.
Mallory Clemmer and Petrosky had nine aces apiece.
Geibel returns to action Tuesday at Neighborhood Academy. The varsity match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
Brownsville 3, Carmichaels 0 — The Lady Falcons earned a sweep in their first match of the season on Saturday against the Lady Mikes.
The match was played at Jefferson-Morgan Middle/High School.
Brownsville won the non-section contest by set scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-19.
The Lady Falcons’ Kenzie Adams had 12 service points and 15 assists. Teammate and University of Virginia commit Skyler Gates had a team-high 12 kills.
Ashley Evanchak led the visitors in digs with 12, and teammate Lena Richichar had eight service points.
Brownsville is back on the court in non-section play Tuesday when it hosts Yough at 6 p.m.
Boys soccer
Mount Pleasant 3, Connellsville 0 — The Vikings scored the only goal they would need in the first half, but added two insurance tallies in the second half to blank the Falcons on Saturday at Connellsville Stadium in non-section action.
Grant Zahrobsky scored on a penalty kick and assisted on his team’s other goals. Bryce Gamble and Lukas Showman also found the back of the net.
Grayson Gardner had the clean sheet, but only needed to make two saves, as the Vikings’ backline, anchored by Damien Ohler, limited the Falcons’ chances in the final third of the field.
Mount Pleasant begins Section 4-2A play on Tuesday against Brownsville at Redstone Field in Republic. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Connellsville plays at Hempfield on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in a non-section contest.
