California survives scare against Frazier
California survived a scare against Frazier, but the Trojans pulled out a 9-8 victory on Tuesday in Section 1-2A at Malden Yards.
California improved to 8-0 in section play and 8-3 overall, while the Commodores fell to 2-5 and 6-7.
The Trojans had built up an 8-3 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning, but Frazier forced extra innings with a five-spot.
Parker Gillen drove in the winning run, as Frazier third baseman Camdon Stokes attempted to gun down Logan Hartley at the plate while throwing to Eli Cernuska, but Hartley scored before the tag could be applied and the home team rejoiced after dodging a bullet.
Hartley singled to right field to open the eighth before Eli Carpenter was intentionally walked. Hartley and Carpenter advanced to second and third base when Chase Shemansky reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no one out.
Ian Godz pitched the final two innings for the win. He allowed five runs (none earned) on five hits with no strikeouts or walks.
Weston Monticelli started for the home team and yielded three runs (two earned) on six hits. He had six strikeouts and walked three over six innings.
Carpenter had three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs. Shemansky added three hits and two RBIs. Teammate Kaden Weston chipped in with three singles and three runs scored. Hartley had two base hits.
Brant Alekson and Chase Fulmer each had a double, and Fulmer drove in two runs. Alekson, Cernuska, Nick Porter and Noah Varga had two hits apiece. Cernuska had two RBIs.
JEFFERSON-MORGAN 12, MAPLETOWN 1 — The Maples opened the scoring with one run in the top of the first inning, but the Rockets responded with three in the bottom of the frame and cruised to a victory in Section 1-1A play at Jefferson-Morgan.
Mapletown’s Kaleb Evosevich hit an RBI single with two outs to score Cameryn Shaffer for a 1-0 lead. Shaffer had reached via walk. Three of the Maples’ four hits were in the first inning.
Jefferson-Morgan (6-4, 7-6) responded quickly in the bottom of the first when Jaymison Robinson tripled to center field and scored on Dayten Marion’s base hit to center for a tie game.
Following an out, John Woodward hit a two-run home run to right field that also scored Marion for a 3-1 advantage.
The Rockets would score five runs in the third and four in the fourth to invoke the 10-run rule.
Robinson added a single and drove in three runs. Teammate Brayden Ellsworth had two hits, including a double. Evan Kniha chipped in with two singles for Jefferson-Morgan.
Starting and winning pitcher Drew Adams had a base hit and two RBIs. Adams allowed one earned run on four hits over five innings. He struck out 10 and walked one.
RINGGOLD 10, UNIONTOWN 6 — The Red Raiders battled back to cut into the Rams’ lead, but couldn’t get over the hump in dropping a Section 2-4A contest at Bailey Park.
Uniontown (2-6, 5-7) was limited to two hits, as Elim Martin and Chandler Mayers singled, but did draw eight walks, including three by Lane Smiley.
Ethan White had two RBIs for the home team and Martin drove in one. The Red Raiders’ Luke Gresh walked twice.
Ringgold’s Gavin Angotti had two hits, including a solo home run in the sixth. He also doubled and scored twice. The Rams’ Dylan Bartkus, Paul Dzyak and Kennedy Nash had one double apiece. Dzyak added two singles to his line.
Ashton Mincin earned the pitching victory after throwing five innings of no-hit baseball with eight strikeouts and six walks. He allowed five runs (two earned). Derek Dunlevy allowed one earned run on two hits over the last two frames. He struck out and walked two.
The Rams improved to 5-5 in the section and 6-8 overall.
WEST MIFFLIN 8, LAUREL HIGHLANDS 3 — The Titans jumped out to a 6-0 lead after an 1 ½ inning and held on for a victory in Section 2-4A action at Tom Landman Field on the campus of Laurel Highlands High School.
West Mifflin improved to 8-0 in the section and 12-3 overall. The Mustangs dropped to 2-6 in section play and 3-9 overall, but will earn a playoff berth if they win their four remaining section games against Ringgold (5-5) and Uniontown (2-6).
Laurel Highlands cut the deficit to 6-2 in the bottom of the second inning when Andrew Irwin hit a line drive to right field that plated Noah Lion and Braden Fowler.
Lion and Braylon Schoch hit back-to-back singles to lead off the frame and Fowler came in as a courtesy runner for Schoch.
After the Titans’ Justin Dillon recorded one of his five strikeouts for the first out, Lion and Fowler advanced to second and third on Andrew Gallick’s grounder to Dillon.
The Mustangs’ third run came in the sixth when Sevi Vecchiolla singled to center field, advanced to third on Lion’s base hit to right and scored on Schoch’s ground out to third base.
Nick Crouch and Cage Senchur each had a single for the home team.
Dillon allowed two earned runs on five hits over five innings for the win. He walked two batters and threw 75 pitches (42 strikes).
Eli Kurta threw the last two frames and yielded one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
Derek Tudek had three hits and two RBIs for West Mifflin. Braeden Andzelik had two hits and drove in two runs. Chase Maggio had two hits and scored twice.
BALDWIN 12, CONNELLSVILLE 4 — The Highlanders used an eight-run seventh inning to down the Falcons in Section 4-5A play at Thomas E. Sankovich Field on the campus of Connellsville Area High School.
Connellsville’s Xander Newmeyer had three base hits. Teammate Linkon Keller had two hits and two RBIs. Keller also tripled.
The Falcons’ Jackson Lee had a hit and drove in two runs.
Noah Zawislan doubled for the home team.
Hudson McKain tripled, and teammates Tyler Geary, Matt Musial and Aiden Robinson each had a double for Baldwin (7-1, 11-2).
Connellsville is at Norwin (8-5) on Friday at 4 p.m.
ELIZABETH FORWARD 13, ALBERT GALLATIN 1 — A 10-run third inning was key in the Warriors’ Section 2-4A triumph over the Colonials at Elizabeth Forward.
Jack Crovak had two doubles and scored two runs for Elizabeth Forward (7-1, 9-4). Starting and winning pitcher Nate Grimm also had a double. Grimm yielded one earned run on five hits over five innings with eight strikeouts and one walk.
Aiden Grimes had two hits, including a triple, and drove in four runs for the home team.
Maddox Reynolds doubled for one of Albert Gallatin’s five hits. Kaiden Brady, Kayden Perez, Clay Smith and Kanyon Sutton each had a single for the visitors.
