Emma Larkin takes a shot during a game against West Greene last season at Geibel Catholic Junior/Senior High School. Larkin and the Lady Gators are undefeated in Section 2-1A play halfway through the regular season.

Geibel Catholic dominated the third quarter and held off a late run from host Serra Catholic for a key 64-55 girls basketball victory Monday night in a clash of the top two teams in Section 2-1A.

The Lady Gators remained unbeaten overall at 14-0 and improved to 7-0 in the section, while the Lady Eagles dropped to 6-1 and 7-5.

“I thought our kids were resilient,” Geibel coach Sara Larkin said. “We’ve known since the beginning of the season that Serra was going to be our biggest competitor, our toughest matchup.

“We’ve been preparing for that since day one.”

Geibel senior Emma Larkin scored a game-high 25 points. Teammate Mallory Clemmer put in 15 and pulled down 17 rebounds, and Alexa Morgan added 12 points.

The Lady Gators, who face another section test when they host third-place West Greene on Thursday, have a one-game lead on Serra Catholic in the section standings.

Geibel had a 12-9 lead after the first quarter, but the Lady Eagles won the second period, 12-9, for a 21-21 contest at halftime.

“We were missing shots in the first half and being a little impatient in our offense, and also were getting caught on some screens at the defensive end,” Sara Larkin said. “We talked about some of the changes we needed to make at halftime and they came out in the third quarter and they smacked them. They did everything we needed to do, made the adjustments and then we held the lead from that point forward.”

The Lady Gators outscored the home team, 23-7, in the third quarter for a 44-28 advantage heading into the fourth frame. Serra Catholic had a 27-20 edge in the final period.

Sara Larkin lauded freshman Morgan for her play against Serra and throughout the season.

“She’s been putting ball in the hoop when we need it,” Larkin said. “When teams play over-aggressive defense on Emma and Mallory, that leaves Alexa free a lot of times and she’s been taking advantage of that.”

Bella Dumbroski led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 17 points. Mia Brush made four 3-pointers and tallied 15 points. Lexi Pearce dropped 10.
