Uniontown Post 51 rallies for 3-2 victory
Uniontown Post 51 started its season off with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Thomas Jefferson Post 935 during the opener for both teams in Fayette County American Legion baseball play on Thursday at Hutchinson Field.
Uniontown trailed 2-1 after four innings, but scored one in the fifth and one in the sixth for the victory.
The winning run came with two outs in the sixth when Parker Hoff scored from third base while his teammate, Jamesen Carter, was caught in a rundown between first and second for a 3-2 lead.
Uniontown coach Rich Franks had Carter take off for second once Thomas Jefferson pitcher Andy Fedoris was in his stretch. Carter was tagged out at first to end the frame. Hoff and Connor Hebda walked to begin the sequence that led to Uniontown scoring the winning run. Hoff stole second with Hebda batting, and advanced to third on defensive indifference.
Nick Fleszar pitched a 1-2-3 seventh with two strikeouts and a groundout to Hebda at catcher for the save.
Jack Johns earned the victory on the mound after throwing two scoreless innings without allowing a hit. He didn’t record a strikeout and walked one.
Eahn Stevenson started and pitched two innings for Uniontown. He yielded one unearned run on one hit with five strikeouts and no walks.
Nick Crouch relieved Stevenson and allowed one earned run on one hit over two frames. He had four strikeouts and didn’t issue a free pass.
Thomas Jefferson opened the scoring in the first inning when Matt Musial singled to right field, and after Chase Oshell was hit-by-pitch, he and Musial advanced to second and third on a passed ball before Musial scored on Ty Geary’s flyout to left field for a 1-0 lead.
Stevenson hit a solo home run over the left-field fence with one out in the bottom of the first on a 2-2 count. Stevenson was down 0-2 in the count after taking a strike looking and missing on his first swing before taking two balls.
Geary drove in Oshell, who had walked and advanced to second on defensive indifference, with a single to center field on a pop fly to help the visitors regain the advantage at 2-1 in the third frame.
Uniontown scored one run on three hits to tie the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning. Hoff led off the frame with a line drive to center field before Lane Smiley was safe at first base on a bunt single.
With one out in the inning, Johns walked to load the bases and Hoff scored on Shane Kelly’s base hit to left field.
Uniontown’s Sevi Vecchiolla doubled to right field in the fourth inning.
Uniontown hosts Smithfield-Fairchance (2-0) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
SMITHFIELD-FAIRCHANCE 4, CARMICHAELS 1 — Kaiden Brady recorded 14 strikeouts and didn’t allow an earned run in a victory for the home team.
Brady yielded one unearned run on three hits over seven innings for the win. He didn’t walk a batter in throwing 87 pitches (65 strikes).
Smithfield-Fairchance (2-0) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Clay Smith and Jake Bellish walked, and Smith scored on A.J. Watson’s line-drive single to left field with two outs in the frame.
Carmichaels (0-1) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning when Chase Ankrom doubled to right field and advanced to third when Carson Vanata was safe at first base on an error. Ankrom scored on Jordan Davis’ sacrifice flyout to right field.
Smithfield-Fairchance regained the advantage and went up by two in the bottom half of the fourth on back-to-back RBI singles to left field from Ben Lilley and Clay Smith for a 3-1 lead.
Kayden Perez led off the inning with a double to center field and moved to third on a passed ball before Kenyon Sutton walked.
Sutton advanced to second on defensive indifference, and after Brady was hit-by-pitch, Sutton moved to third when Perez scored on Lilley’s run-scoring single. Sutton raced home on Smith’s base hit for the two-run advantage.
The home team extended its cushion to 4-1 in the fifth when Matt Malinsky walked, stole second and advanced to third on Perez’s flyout to center field. Malinsky scored on Sutton’s fly ball to right field.
Carmichaels threatened in the seventh when Vanata singled and moved to third on Davis’ double to left field, but Brady recorded a strikeout, induced a popup to second and forced a flyout to right field to finish the complete game.
CHARLEROI 7, BROWNSVILLE 6 — Brock Henderson hit a walk-off double to left field for a victory in Charleroi Post 22’s opener against Brownsville at Veterans Memorial Field in Charleroi.
Tristyn Woods doubled to center field and Logan Hartley singled before both scored on Henderson’s game winner.
Brownsville (0-2) opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the second on five straight walks, a sacrifice flyout to center field and a throwing error.
Control issues from Brownsville led to Charleroi () tying the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the second frame when three Charleroi batters were hit-by-pitch, two walked and Josh Hawkins hit an RBI single to right field. Hawkins scored on a wild pitch.
Brownsville regained the lead with a run in the top of the fourth frame when Nash Petroff drove in Johnathan Vasbinder on a single to left field for a 5-4 lead.
Cam Perez was hit-by-pitch and scored on Lazer Glasser’s line-drive double to center field to tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth.
Brownsville had its last lead in the top of the seventh when Hunter McDonald walked, advanced to third on Joshua Huston’s base hit to right field and stepped on home plate when Adam Vojacek was safe at first base on an error for a 6-5 edge.
Huston had three hits and drew one walk. Petroff drove in two runs and walked. Vasbinder walked three times, and McDonald drew two base on balls.
